FPS Design Pack Now Released

by Robert Fritzen · 02/14/2014 (10:32 am) · 4 comments

So, I almost thought I was going to have to miss out on the release today because my website FTP is being evil to me for some unknown reason, alas, I still had access to what I needed and was able to get everything up and running. So let's get into part two of the Advanced FPS Kit. This time around is the FPS Design Package which includes a 35 page document I wrote on design strategies for creating FPS games as well as some programming strategies to complete tasks in an effective and timely manner.

This one looks a wee bit smaller than the last one (in fact, the file size is less than 1MB), but it's still packed with some goodies I'm sure you'll like.

So, as I mentioned, 35 page document regarding FPS Design strategies and implementation processes. Now, while I'm not one for writing advanced and technical documents, I do enjoy laying out some key principles and examples, and this one should be a great opportunity for starters to get their feet wet, per say.

This should be a great opportunity for the non-scripting folk to get a taste of the implementation phase of the game as I walk you through some basic principles and even a very simple to follow problem solving process for completing tasks. And there's also the holy grail of what I call the six do's and do-nots for FPS Games, it's another one of those "fun" tutorials filled with my humor and information in a way I hoped to get the clear message out.

But closer to the end of the document, I lay out some good starting principles on how to accomplish in-game tasks and sort of explain how everything works together. And I even provide some good code samples to build from and to help people who need to get their custom C++ code to be recognized in TorqueScript. All in all, it's a fairly straight forward process.

And while most of you might not be interested in that, I still have something for everyone else in the form of my weapon system including my custom loadout designer system. I showed this picture last time around and it's pretty self explanatory on how it works to allow users to build up a loadout consisting of items within individual classes.

And of course, I also demonstrated that it's built from the .XML file here:

Now, I wasn't able to get everything I wanted in this release (I have an annoying flu I caught late last week to blame for that), but I'll probably release some additional content to people who grab this item. I know Lukas wanted the ability to further customize the dialog just in .XML, and I should be able to deliver that kind of customizability in the future, I also wasn't able to complete a full tutorial on how to set up the in-game selector to design game-restricted loadouts, however the full capabilities to doing so are already in the script. I'll probably come back early next week with an update push to the pack to include a process on how to do that.

So, like the first release, this one's also $10 and it's now also up for grabs on that a-la-carte page of mine here.

However, as with my first release (which by the way is up to 6 total sales, thanks guys), I'm not really expecting this one to "be big" in terms of the AFPSK's main features. The "big one" in terms of the pack will likely be arriving within the next two weeks when I send out the Radar GUI and the included Map Selector GUI. I've got a little spoiler, this one's got a very explosive surprise in the form of a powerful weapon. But alas, details to come later , hope you guys like this! :)

Robert, how much is the next pack that's being released going to cost? Or is it just an upgrade to the AFPSK?

@James: If you're referring to the Radar, I haven't decided 100% on that yet, however I'm thinking it will be in the $15 - $20 range, however, if you're talking about the updates to the Loadout screen (IE: more XML control) and additional documentation regarding the FPS Design pack, that will come free of charge to all who own the pack as it's simply an "update" to the pack.

@All: Thank you guys so much, I honestly didn't see 6 sales in less than 24 hours coming... you guys are awesome, and this will only make me strive to deliver even bigger and better next time.
