Torque2D for Linux

by Tim Newell · 11/03/2013 (4:05 pm) · 5 comments

So now that I have finished the android port of torque 2d, I was wondering if there was any interest in a Linux port with the up and coming Steam OS or just normal distribution through Ubuntu, etc.

My thoughts were to either run a kickstarter or do paypal donations until a goal is reached. I am thinking about 2 or 3 grand for the port goal. I need to research it some more to find out an exact price but I wanted to keep it low since Linux is not as popular as the other platforms plus I think I can get it done much faster than the android port took.

Basically I am starting this blog to gauge interesting and see what you guys think and to kinda judge if there is even a point in trying it.

And of course if the goal is met, the port would be merged into T2D MIT on github just like the android port.

Any feedback at all is welcome.

I would / will gladly contribute monetarily for a Linux Port.

For SteamOS, I can definitely see you guys selling a bundle for Torque2D SteamOS + SteamWorks integration. I would have no problem with purchasing that.

Great for a port! If doing a crowd funding campaign keep in mind the usually don't do too good. i think maybe setting up a website and having people donated on that site would work better.
2 to 3 thousand dollars may take awhile for the community to come up with and I would hate to see yet another failed crowd funding campaign. I KNOW both t2D and T3D would benefit from this. As I said the main issue being that community not being as big, and a too small of a time frame. Good Luck!

Nice one, Tim. After this you'll only have to finish off Mac, PS4, Xbone and Dreamcast! ;)

What Simon said! SteamOS integration could probably be a worthy product in the future.

Sounds like a great idea.
