Another Update

by Bill Vee · 07/06/2013 (1:58 pm) · 9 comments

Just another update on my progress.
I made some changes to the grenade launcher to demonstrate the type of game play that is possible with my custom terrain.

This may be the last update for a while , due to my real life situation.
Without going into too much detail, my work life leaves little free time to do anything else.
I made a major effort to do ass much on this project as I could with every free moment I had , on and off work, and while I think I accomplished a lot in the last 2 weeks it left me completely exhausted. The human body simple can't keep going on 4-6 hours of sleep a day for 2 weeks , or at least mine can't.

I simply don't have the resources I need to finish this project in any reasonable span of time.
I will have to do some soul searching to figure out where to go from here.

Now I know who created the moon!

Or should that be cratered Lol

Very cool! B)

Real life responsibilities are always a horrid challenge to balance, I hope you come to a decision that'll meet your obligations and also reward all the hard work you've poured into this over the years.

awesome dynamic/deformable terrain - seems to exceed the limits of the current terrain in many ways as well. I noticed how it can create over hangs and not just up to 90 degree angle.

Plus how it digs that hole deeper with the craters has lots of potential uses!

If you ever get the time, I for one would be happy to support with $$ for an add-on like this.

Cool!

I was a bit amazed when you started to work in to the terrain horizontally! Great work!

Thats awesome stuff Bill, But I can totally understand where youre coming from with the burnout and real life getting in the way... Would love to have a play around with that terrain to see what could be made with it... To me, from my perspective, that tooling looks more useful as terrain editors rather than an ingame mechanic, being able to make seamless overhangs and tunnels has been a bit of a quest of mine, and using "shapes" to create them just isnt as seamless as i have ever liked or been happy with...

You've got some very cool tech there; I hope your real life situation doesn't prevent it from being more than just some cool videos. If you haven't got time to work on it anymore, perhaps you can release the code so someone else can continue with it?

@Bill,
I can look at the code if you want and make it resource-able. You won't have to spend any time beyond getting the code to me. I could setup something on xp-dev to hold a repo. That way you could supervise whenever you actually have time.

Anyway, if I don't hear back from you I will start down this path as well.

Thanks for sharing your progress. It is excellent.

Wow, very neat!

I think everyone can sympathize with the exhaustion. Software development can suck up such a ridiculous amount of a person's time. :-/ I hope you find the right balance and that your neat technologies find some real-world use. Kudos!

Since you said you don't have the time to finish this, why don't you open-source your code so other people can extend it?
