Torque 2D On Android and Linux: Who wants it?

This is your chance to get Torque 2D on Android and Linux

Greetings everyone! I want to keep this blog short and sweet, as I will be posting it on other sites. This is the last week to contribute to the Kickstarter campaign for bringing Torque 2D to Android. Additionally, Max Gaming recently updated the rewards. Now, their work will also included support for Linux.

For the small amount being requested, this is an amazing value. Two new platforms, for the cost of one, at a price that is easily achievable.

If you look at the Kickstarter Campaign, you will see that they are already at $4,011. I'm not asking anyone to dig deep and empty their bank accounts. Any amount will help. My own personal recommendation is the $25 option. That particular tier will result in you getting the port before everyone else.

Android Support

Before I proceed with the update information, I highly encourage everyone to visit the KickStarter for Torque 2D MIT On Android. Direct quote from MGT:

Quote:Max Gaming Technologies has launched a kickstarter to fund an android port of T2D MIT as well as a port for the Ouya. Everyone who backs the project at $25 or more will get access to the port once it is complete. Everyone else will have to wait 6 months for the port to go open source MIT on Github.

We also offer some support at the different tiers and the final Ouya port will be delayed until we get access to a console but we will give early access based off the SDK before that. We will also be porting the default toys that come with T2D as well. Any and all donations are welcomes, come help us bring this great engine to the android platform.

LINUX SUPPORT!!!

Straight from the campaigners page:

Quote:As part of the intial funding we will be adding Linux support for T2D as part of the package. Thanks to "TRON" from the Garagegames community for contributing to help add to T2D MIT list of platforms.

GarageGames Support

It should be obvious that GarageGames supports this effort. This is what open source development is all about. Beyond our official endorsement, I will also be offering some of my time to help with any core architecture changes that might be required. If core parts of the engine need to be modified to keep the other platforms on par, or support a new feature, I will be available to help.

Need more incentive? Alright, how about this. Even if you are not interested in Android, Linux, or improving the core tech, I have something for you. I will create five new modules just for people who contribute to the campaign. Three will offer new functionality, while the other two will be asset packs. These new modules will not be added to the main Torque 2D repositories.

Based on past experience and review of previously available GG store items, the value should easily be over $50. The modules themselves are the kind of add-ons anyone would grab immediately to speed up their game development. So, there you have it. Something for everyone! Of course, the one catch is that you need to be able to prove you made a contribution =).

Conclusion

That's it for this blog, folks. Our community is not the largest on the web, but it is one of the strongest. This is our chance to support each other, but to also get something amazing in return. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in this blog. I'm sure I can get MGT in here to answer them, plus I will be following the replies if you have questions for me.

Long live Torque 2D!

Regards,
Mich

It's a great idea. I'll have to talk to Eric and our web dev to see if that can be done.

If you are feeling poor (or extra generous), perhaps you can help with an upvote on reddit? This will help keep the announcement up top a little longer. And as we know, Reddit has become the place to hang for discussion boards nowadays.

To follow the excellent effort by Charlie, I have posted my first original content on Reddit. The topic is on Successful Community Maintenance, but I heavily plug the Android Kickstarter. Please upvote and if possible, reply with zeal =)

All they need now is about $6500. I hope this go through! With this port, Apple is no longer the single option for beginners and indie devs. Don't get me wrong, apple is sweet, but to pay to begin development...well let me just say that this may be the boost google needed in the Android ecosystem.

Finally!!, this should have been done 2 years ago... anyways with this port T2D can finally compete in equal ground with COCOS2D, Unity, GameSalad... etc.

great news Michael

You guys should work on the port even if its not funded, if not, don't be surprised if in 1+ years nobody cares about t2d..

@Hugo - My efforts are focused on improving the core features, and then on the editors. The top voted feature by our users is an editor system. The next highest was Android, then Linux. Because we, GarageGames, can't do it all, we are highlighting efforts from other developers. The problem is that they aren't getting paid to do the work, so when they want to do it fulltime they need funding.

That's why I'm pushing this Kickstarter so hard. In short, there are a lot of things to be worked on, but GG can't do it all. Please consider donating to this campaign Hugo.

@Michael, yeah I understand is difficult to be a dev, tell me about that, no hard feelings, but as you said the top voted feature is an editor system, fair enough, but consider also that the majority of T2D user base are indie devs or students, they are using this tool for learning and once in a while publish a game, if you ask companies the same question I'm sure they will vote for Android in first place.

I really love working on T2D but as I said on other posts my efforts are now focused on just prototyping, I can't use your engine on commercial stuff because the industry demands cross platform solutions... :(

BTW, I almost cried when I saw the post title title "T2D on Android"...

Keep up the great work Michael

Tough target to reach with 3 days remaining - wish I had the whole amount to give to this, even though I'm not using 2D at the moment, I'd like to use it next year, but like Hugo says multiple deployments is a must have feature these days especially to corner all angles of your market place when competing with other titles. I can see that Unity is lacking in 2D (apart from the 3rd party packs you can create them) - I'm sure it will not be long before they corner that side of the market with their own solutions. Apart from spreading the word Michael, how else can people help make this happen?

Edit: On a side note - do you guys use T2D for any commercial projects (3rd party) ? If you do, what do you use when a client wants Android and Linux ports? Could you not factor in this cost and maybe reduce it if they allow you to use the build for a MIT release?

Another Reward:
If this gets funded I will put more priority on the Python port of T2D.

ugh I am so mad. I have begged and pleaded with GG for so long to support the web. I have preached and screamed that the future is Web and HTML5 and it always fell on deaf ears. I have loved and hated Torque. This relationship has been a rocky one but one with some good times yet the directions taken have always been ones I have had to question. I will always have a special place for Torque but seeing it all go open source and then continue on the deployed app train just is a kick to the stomach. There are SOOOOO many HTML5 engines out there and options that deploy to the Web, IOS, Android, Facebook, ect.. that are free and some that are no more than $99 yet as powerful and wonderful Torque can be it follows these silly paths of limiting everyone who uses it. For every copy you sell on Android you can get another 3 ysers from the web and facebook. As a web developer I know the money is in in game sells NOT app store sells. Now we got to give MORE money to port it to something that should have been done ages ago. Hate me fore saying this but what is going on in the meetings at Torque? How many players do web games need to get before someone at GG says "Hey there might be hella money in an engine that can deploy to Facebook, the Web, IOS, Android, ect.. and lets add websockets for a awesome MMO engine that EVERYONE wants and make it non plugin.

K my rant is over I love you GG yet cry myself to sleep over what has been lost and what could have been. I believe I am giving up for good.

@hallsofvalhalla
.... You know it isn't GG who runs the Kickstarter right? GG is simply promoting a Kickstarter that MaxGamingTechnology(?) has put up. This has nothing to do with GG's decision making.

Besides one of the reasons for an android port is for releasing games for the Ouya console which has received alot of hype.

Porting the engine to Android is afaik a hell of alot easier than porting it to html5, but if it means so much to you, you are free to start a html5 initiative yourself, it is open source now, it is up to the community to take care of these kind of decisions. The future of T2D all depends on the community, people seem to think that even though GG opensourced the engine, they should still be the ones making the decisions and doing the development.
