Free PostFX Color Correction Pack, Volume 1

by Jordan Parsons · 08/14/2012 (2:43 am) · 14 comments

I've decided to go ahead and release it for free to all who want it.

Download

Brief overview of what the pack does and a few reasons to use it:

1) I offer a wide range of custom, very professional, detailed color corrections that are based on industry standard theoretical complimentary color schemes that actually match to the other color tones in your scene rather than having your scene an eye sore.

2) You don't have to know one thing about color correction, or tones, or hues, or brightness/gamma correction or have to customize any individual or master values to get the color correction you need. You just apply the color correction that comes in the pack that you think most fits your scene and apply it.

3) There are absolutely no script or source code changes that need to be applied first to apply the color correction. Everything is handled within the world editor and with a few clicks, you're all set.

4) The color correction can be applied on a per-mission basis without any code changes. Each color correction change can be saved and loaded when the mission loads automatically - again, no code changes necessary. For example, if you need a warm color scheme on one mission and a cool color scheme on another mission, you can apply the warm color correction to mission1 and then apply the cool color correction to mission2, save the presets on each and when that mission loads it will load your color correction respectively for each mission.

It cuts down dramatically on overall development time and if you have artists that are working on your environment, they will love it. Those of you that are developers will love it as well, because you can spend more time on developing other important features rather than mess with color correction or engine customizations to try and get proper color correction. I've done that all for you :)

Hope you all enjoy this pack and if it turns out to be a much needed/appreciated resource, maybe I'll release another one in the near future :) Have fun!

[UPDATE]
Here's what I came up with using my pack:

Looks cool but unfortunately, I don't have the color correction tab! O.o
Don't remember deleting it.. Then again, I got a tab called sharpness and one called nightvision. I might have played with it some time and then lost it. Most unfortunate!

Not bad for a 2 year old!
2 year olds know how to use a mouse!?

Great stuff. Cheers. Infra-red is kinda cool in a trippy way.

Lukas, it's for 1.2, not 1.1.

Thats probably the culprit then, I must have installed some 1.1 resource on my 1.2 engine.
Gah gotta go fix that!

Doesn't work for colorblind people ;)

Nah, that's actually pretty good work, even I can tell the difference!

@All - sorry for the late response. Needed sleep and was busy at work all day :)

@Lukas - Thanks for the comments! Yeah, I'm guessing you probably configured an older PostFX resource. Test it out whenever you can and let me know what you think of it whenever you can use it ;)

@Steve - As always Steve, you rock with your help of the community! :) Thanks for filling in while I was away. Yes, my 2 year old son knows how to use the mouse and can click away and play games. Took him about an hour to figure it out :P My boy is growing up so fast :'( *tear* lol

@Michael - hahaha, thanks. I kept you in mind when I was designing some of these. I was wondering if you'd actually be able to notice any difference and when you'd post a response :) Thanks again!

The problem was the SSAO2 resource, it has to be added in manually in 1.2. Which I did, and now kindda regretting it. The SSAO in 1.2 seems better than the SSAO2.. Oh well.
Some before and after screens for the interested:

It's a WIP tho so not perfectly satisfied with the looks but definetly an improvement.
The first one is the null color ramp the second one is the blockbuster.

Edit: Seeing the comment now, those two screenshot doesn't make justice to this pack. It is much more noticeable ingame where the stock color ramp is very dull and the Blockbuster is much more vivid.

Lukas Joergensen - Ahh yeah, that SSAO2 resource will take those tabs away.

Thanks for the comments and constructive crit :) Yeah, the hard part about making this pack, was the fine balance between that color correction quality and making sure each of them stand true to their name and making it look good for pretty much any texture you load into the game. I'm glad you were able to use it and thanks again for taking the time to show us your work while using my pack :)

Just tried the pack and I have to say that the selection is awesome and really gives you a variety of scenarios... I wasn't sure how much this would change things, but this has taken a bland night level and turned it into a creepy night level.

I can't believe how much these have refreshed my project, thank you for the opportunity to use this pack!

P.S. Good documentation also.

Awesome! I'm super stoked and thanks for the kind words :)

Whenever you get a chance or have a finished product, I'd love to see a screenshot of it. I'm going to be putting a section on my website for this pack, and I'd love to get actual screenshot of it in use other than my projects ;)

Sorry everybody. I've just finished up a migration and upgrade of my web servers. For about 2 weeks you wouldn't have been able to get to the download file. The link should work fine now.
