Company & Game Logos and MACSK

by Adam Beer · 08/07/2012 (2:45 pm) · 16 comments

Its been a little bit since I've blogged, and that's mostly due to the fact that I've been focusing on web development a lot more than game development. Ignition Game's parent company Ambient Wave Inc. has recently launched a graphic/3D design service that allows companies or individuals to post design contests for logos, business cards, flyers, 3d models and more...and have designers from all around the world compete by creating drafts that they submit to your contest.

You as the contest holder choose the draft you like the best, and the designer is awarded the prize amount that you set. There is zero risk to post up a contest, you don't have to pay anything up front if you don't want to and the minimum prize amount for logos starts at just $100. You can choose a higher prize amount if you wish as well.

If you want to check it out, or even post up a design contest just visit www.logodesignwave.com.

Now on to MACSK. I'm very proud of how it turned out and would like to thank everyone who purchased it. For those of you not familiar with MACSK (Modern Air Combat Starter Kit), you can read what its about on the Product Page.

I have been meaning to create an update for it, but I'm not too sure what exactly could be added to it. Additional aircraft first came to my mind, but I don't know how useful that would be to the people using it. For the people currently using it, and anyone looking into possibly using it in the future; What features would you like to see added?

I look forward to hearing from anyone using MACSK to see how they're using the kit!

@Adam: Could we get the source included. I have a whole bunch of models and ideas but need to remove some of the fluff from the current code. I also want to recompile and make some engine changes myself.

Hopefully I haven't missed the point. 8-}

I haven't really touched MACSK since I played around with it when I first got it. Those SAM sites are kicking my butt! The reason I haven't used it is because the implementation I want isn't within my ability to perform. That is, I want to walk around one minute, then jump into a plane and fly around the next. That's beyond me at this stage. I also don't like the lost camera modes inside the editor.

I haven't noticed any bugs or glitches though. I just can't adapt it yet.

@Quinton - what are you doing with it, if I might ask?

@Dan: I have a FPS style game idea where you control Drones (Light, Medium, Heavy) to take on other teams.

Teams are stationed in a circling command ship that also can be attacked.

Teams are limited to the amount of Drones they have for a match.

Teams can repair drones by flying behind the command ship.

Teams can re-charge and re-arm weapons by flying through special marked gates.

5 point pitch. 8-}

Bloody hell, that sounds like fun! Also, 5 point pitch works when those 5 points are all awesome.

It actually sounds similar to a concept I've been sitting on, where each team has a budget and a set of victory conditions. The first team to meet all VCs within budget wins.

Drop me a line if you need another set of hands. dan [at] psycandygames [dot] com. I'm currently not doing much on my own game, and I know you've been pretty busy.

@Adam - what would be awesome is landing gear. Maybe an aircraft carrier? Just putting it out there because it's all I think that's 'missing' from the kit. Given the low cost of the kit however, I understand if that doesn't interest you.

@Dan: Cool ... will keep that in mind.

@Adam: I would pay an extra fee for the full source ... just in case you were wondering. 8-}

I'm looking at what appears to me to be full source here in my MACSK folder. All the engine stuff is here. All the models have the .max files and .psd files. What are you missing Quinton?

@Quinton - Full source is included for the engine and assets with MACSK. The engine source is drag, drop, overwrite and re-compile for T3D 1.1 or 1.2. You can find all the engine source in the 'Engine' folder and all the source assets in 'Art Assets' Folder. I look forward to seeing the game you're working on as well!

@Dan - The ability to land and takeoff was an idea that I had thought about as well. I had thought of a few ways to implement it that ranged from simple to complex and each one seems reasonable. I think that would be a great feature to add, but all updates are always going to be free :)

Hey Adam, the Modern Air Combat Starter Kit (MACSK) looks pretty hot. Is weapon addition and interaction the same as vanilla T3D?

@Adam and @Dan: Oh wow look at that ... the source ... go figure ... I mean really what is it doing in the 'Engine' folder. 8-p

Sorry man ... with age goes the memory ... heheheeheh.

Right ... off to make my prototype. *grin* ... 8-}

Have fun Quinton!

@Adam - That sounds encouraging. I'll be using spacecraft in my game, so the ships will most likely be VTOL. I also want to have a play with the new hoverVehicle at some point. Hover cars are groovy.

@Mack - Weapon additions and interactions are pretty much the same. There is documentation on adding new weapons that come with the kit. The process is pretty much the same for the datablocks and such, and there's only a couple extra steps to get the new weapon strapped to the aircraft.

@Dan - I may one day add something like the F35 that has VTOL, but that may be a little ways away.

Adam, if you do that it'll be awesome, but I really don't see the need. Also, these models are fantastic. Who made them, if you don't mind the asking?

They were made by our modeler. Some of the paint jobs were done by him, some by me.

The ability to land the aircraft (get some retractable landing gear implemented) and/or give it the ability to have it hover slightly above the ground when added (VTOL). I haven't checked yet, are the planes truly mountable vehicles (guessing not), - that would be nice as well.
You may also want to think about expanding it to beyond Air Combat as in fighter jet (there's plenty of other aircraft heli/prop etc).

Still, as is, this kit is excellent.

I bought it when released but I only used it to build an early prototype. What I needed to do was to figure out how much work it would be to make a VTOL work in game.
The game design I have calls for futuristic aircraft, but the ones that came with the kit were well done.
Landing on a surface, like a aircraft carrier or an airport would be nice. I would pay for an upgrade.
It is a nice kit, and well worth the money.
