STICKS TWIGS FOR T3D 1.2 DEMO MISSIONS UPDATE
WARNING, THIS PLAN IS PROBABLY RATED PG...MAYBE PG13...
Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon...
- J.R.R. Tolkien
Hey Everyone!
I know you all think that I fell off the planet, but I was actually abducted by aliens and have been probed constantly for nearly seven months. At least that's what I remember, but it could actually be a false memory supressing the truly horrific real memories of working retail for a living. (Yes Julian...I'm alive -- just a looser and abysmal at email in particular as of late...)
Levity aside, it's really just been a dry last year. I've not felt at all like modeling, and have really felt like the Indie industry has advanced beyond my skills set. The transition from BSP/CSG based modeling to mesh based for my skill level has been slow, at least really getting my head around UV mapping. I guess I understand it, but just can't imagine that a process so time intensive is the best way that can achieved - but then again we still power our vehicles using gallons upon gallons of fairly inefficient fuel and use folded up pieces of paper to wipe our...ah, the complaints of modern living.
Well, enough of that, and now for something completely different - a completed update of the demo missions for the Sticks Twigs Environment Pack for T3D 1.2!
Yeaaaah!
About time! You say, and you're right. It should have been done last year but each time I sat down to work on it just seemed easier to Rick Roll myself or watch that Orangutan peeing on himself. It just busts me up every time! It just seemed like there was one distraction after another, but really, how many times can you watch Katy Perry naked on some clouds or Satisfaction by Benny Benassi? Well, from personal experience, I can say A LOT.
Ok, so I thought I was done, but now I think I've got it all out of my system.
So it's finished. And all joking aside this will more than likely been the final update that the S&T Pack sees. It's served its purpose and has seen a long and successful run but it's time to move on to other assets, other packs that I have in mind and step up in my modeling game. This will result in a bit less overall content, but hopefully a increase in quality. Hopefully I'll have time to post some WIP examples soon.
So regarding the update. The 25 Demo Missions have been baslically re-written from the ground up, with shape replicators & foliage replicators replaced by forest objects and groundcover. These Demo Missions are specifically designed to be utilized with a vanilla/clean build - i.e. there is the distinct possibility that if you try and lay these down on your working build you will break something (material scripts most likely).
These missions serve as an example of what kind of environments these models can produce, but not necessarily limited to. There are two flavors of the T3D 1.2 Update, one that includes all the art assets and one that is just the updated mission scripts and any updated art assets. If you have the 1.0.1 version of the art assets already downloaded, you would merely need to drop that pack in a clean install of T3D ExamplesFPS Examplegame directory and then the 1.2 Level Only version into the same, allowing it to overwrite the existing mission files and art assets with the updated ones.
Oh, and as usual I've told absolutely no one I should have actually informed at Garage Games about this update...so if you need it right away and you picked up the pack from GG, you can just email me ( alanjamesATcharter.net )and I'll get you hooked up with a link until it's updated here on GG. Sorry David B. I'm such a looser...I'll fire off the links for you guys here shortly!
To celebrate this release, we are running a week long 50 percent off all Packs on www.monsterpacks.com. Use coupon code finally2012at checkout, can be used as many times as you would like through May 7, 2012 beginning April 30, 2012.
Thanks for reading all this, once again and for checking out the stuff!
Alan

Quick question:
I assume these are mostly pieces you put together yourself, so they would be good for auto generated levels? I intend to create levels and place objects according to satellite data and am looking for raw data packs. I will have to create rules for elevation and climate and place items accordingly.

Good to see you got over your alien issues :-) Pack looks great too. I have had this one for years and it comes in handy quite a bit!

Thanks for catching that. It's a funky way Kyle (My oldest son stationed in Sicily coded it). Should be fixed momentarily. OK fixed.
@Julian, Dan, Kory, Ron;
Hey guys, thanks again and definitely going to try my best to keep up on correspondence!
@Frank,
Yes they're individual pieces, the roadways and such would be a serious trick getting them to align perfectly through code, though. I've always considered a site combo promotion, it's just my site admin and coder is currently property of the U.S. Navy and so I have to work with him around their schedule...go figure!

Just checked and it seems to be working. In your download section to the right it should look like this:

Click on the blue text that reads "Click to request download link", momentarily it should change to look like this:

Then just click on the text/link that reads "Download ready and it should start your download.
If you've never downloaded the pack choose the "Update Sticks & Twigs T3D 1.2 Demo Missions Update with Assets" link and it will give you all the assets and the updated missions, if you previously had downloaded the 1.0.1 version (file named ST_T3D_1.0.1_DEMO_Z.zip or ST_T3D_1.0.1_DEMO.zip) and you're working on a clean install of T3D 1.2 (which I would greatly suggest, so as not to break any working builds) then you simply extract the assets into the the appropriate directory, i.e. the "ExampleFPS Example" directory making sure the subdirectories landed in the right spots, then extract the updated missions the same way.
You can also always merely extract the assets and/or missions to a unique directory and then look over the directory structure so you can get a sense of its structure before dropping it all into a build.

And what a fast and good user support!
Jepp, i get all that you discribe, exactly as in you comment above. BUT when i click download i get "http 404". I would like not to show the http string url in this public blog, just in case it contains some non-public information. I could send it to you (alanjamesATcharter.net) if that helps. ( I can download correctly the old files, so thats why i quess it could be something with the url.)
EDIT: I also tried in compatibility mode with the same result.
Best regards
Kaj

Oh man I'm an idiot! You have the environment combo pack, don't you? I got all the coding right but that's a separate directory from the S&T only pack and I forgot to move a copy into that FTP directory!
I'm fixing that right now, but go ahead and email me, and I'll send you back the direct links. Sorry!
*UPDATE TO THE UPDATE*
Those with the Environmental Combo Pack your download links should work now!

I just went to order and it will not let me select PayPal. I did a search on Plimus and I am not sure I want to trust my credit card info to them. Can you get a PayPal link working?
I am wary because last year I had 2 credit cards stolen. I usually research payment companies before using. I got too many hits for Plimus including a reference to a class action lawsuit against them.

Plimus just in the last few months I believe made a Paypal option available to vendors. I haven't at this point set it up, primarily because at first glance at the configuration I figured I'd have better luck programming a lunar lander. (I've been with them for over five years now and I know of no problems...but am understanding of your hesitation).
But all is not lost! If you've got to the point of checkout, that means you've successfuly set up an account on www.monsterpacks.com!
If you send me off your login name, I'll activate which ever pack(s) you are interested in and once I confirm that your downloads are available in your account, you can just send the payment direct to me. Just email me at alanjamesATcharter.net with your login and pack(s)selection and I'll get you all set up.
*UPDATE AGAIN*
Ok, so I just went over it again. I might have got it set up right this time to take Paypal through Plimus (this time they had pictures!). If you are willing to be the guinea pig, you can give 'er a go! If not we can always do it as I've outlined above, whatever is easiest for you!
BTW, I think that Paypal *may* have been available before, but they'd changed some API requirements/setup possibly, but I'm not sure on that point.

I'm wondering if you have the art set up as Forest Items in the Forest Editor in T3D? If so, do you think you could post a download for the forest item data so that we can easily use the S&T (well, Environment Combo Pack for me) models in the Forest Editor without having to manually reselect every model.
Many thanks!

LOL...that would have been a great idea wouldn't it...if I'd have thought of it *before* re-doing the levels...but no, I just haphazardly loaded meshes without a clue rather than creating actual forest items that actually would have been really useful to everyone.
Sorry! Once again my idiocity has been exposed...
...that's it...I'm off to watch the Orangutan...
