Hmm seems interesting, like a fast way to set up some GUI.
But i my concerns is:
How is this better than drawing it in program like Gimp or Photoshop?
And how differentiated is the products that is made?
Like if i used this and made some GUI objects with it, how big is the risk that my GUI would look pretty close to several other games using this product?

If you can draw in gimp/photoshop, then you may not need this product. This product is for people who are not artists, or would like to prototype fast by using a building block type approach.

You can use combinations of artwork from the resources to create your own look and feel, along with effects and color filters. As to how many can be created is unknown and limited by only your imagination and the number of artwork resources available. But having said that, any pack you buy that saves you time and money will have its similarities, it's how you use it or make custom changes to the end result.

For as long as 2D GUI HUD Creator is supported, there will be additional tools added over time. Such as custom and dynamic health bar sequencers. But for the moment we're concentrating on adding artwork resources.

edit: updated my first post #1 to avoid any further confusion as to who this tools is for and what purpose it has - rather than repeat myself every blog :)

From experience.. The way I see it, with any pack I've purchased over the years...

How much would it cost me in time + money to create what I need, over buying a pack that costs $30-50 to save me hours and hours of time and money, even when prototyping a game, you can always change or update the artwork later once you've made your money or investment/funding. The key is to get your game out there, prototyped as fast as you can. This is one of the reasons why I created this product.

Looks great S2P. This can really save a lot of time, especially when prototyping. Keep up the good work.

Does it come with scripts to make these "GUIs" function in Torque, or is it just a prefabbed art tool? If this can export scripts to use in game it will be really useful.

Thanks Greg.

Hi Joe - It doesn't create Torque GUI scripts at the moment, as the product is not aimed at just Torque devs, but as we also develop in Torque we may support it with scripts and tutorials at a later date by creating functionality for health bars, car speedometres, mini-maps etc. It's more of an easy to use artwork tool, bundled with layered artwork resources that are customizable (with effects and colors) to assist a programmer in the creation of GUIs / HUDs along with other supporting artwork for those elements, such as Inventory items. On the scripting it will depend on the demand, as if we do it for Torque.. we'd need to do it for other engines at some point.

Updated the Artwork Library page - some of the GUI / HUDs you can create. Not all components have been used in each of the designs. You can mix artwork components up from various compatible categories.

If you would/could make it export gui scripts that would definetly be awesome! :D

However the product seems pretty neat!

I just wanna mention something tho, on this site: http://www.2dguihud.com/artwork-library.htm The links on the libraries seems to be broke (eg. Button Panels)

Thanks Lukas

On that page, if you refresh it may be cached as we changed the format. We will consider adding script support soon :) Just a few other products to update first before we think about expanding this one further, other than the weekly artwork updates we are currently doing.

Also artwork updates are based on how many sales we get in to cover the cost - as some of the larger work requires us to hire an artist that costs more than we get back - so it's a fine balance. We've placed 2D GUI HUD in an app store and waiting for funds come in from that before we get some of the larger artwork items we want to add, so after this update there may only be small artwork updates until June that we can do ourselves, however we are going to be working on adding more code functionality until then.

edit: We would have loved to get 2D GUI HUD in the GG store, but there is too much red tape involved, and getting our accountant involved would cost 20-30 sales, just to get this product in the store. We have an update to GRS and GMMS out very soon, once it has been quality tested, so if we can get all products in the GG store we may think about it then.
