Orcs vs. Martians - updated video

by Geom · 11/19/2010 (12:05 am) · 13 comments

The video in the last blog I posted was slightly out-of-date, so I thought I'd post another one. This video demos the swanky new chase camera, health bars, and (some) new sound effects. This time from the perspective of the Martian race.

Enjoy.

I've worked more on the sound fx for upgraded human towers (firing artillery shells / cannonballs), but unfortunately those new fx didn't get into this video. At about 8:35 I (playing as the Martians) encountered a human cannon tower, and he got off maybe one shot, but then fraps cut out.

Man, you've got some serious cool technologies going on.

This gets better every day. And I can only agree with Leathel. If one looks close theres a ton of really neat tech embedded in your baby there.

Awesome, i wonder how you manage the progressive black part on the map and in the mission area?

It's great work!

It's a good thing Torque provides full access to source code, unlike some other engines out there; there's no way I could have written OvM without source.

Yeah doing the RTS fog-of-war was an interesting challenge. For the 3-D view, I implemented it by dynamically altering both the heights and textures of the landscape. There're resources here on the TP website for how to do those. For the 2-D minimap, I'm just drawing a partly-transparent/partly-black bitmap on top of a 2nd, regular bitmap of the game map. I update the transparent/black bitmap as the game runs.

@Dewaldt
Thanks, no. I'm thinking of taking a break from game dev after this project is done.

@Kici
You don't ask for much, do you? :)

well wouldn't you feel better knowing you helped other people advance??? or you are just going to keep it to yourself and let everyone else struggle :)
