PoV's Challenge?

by Edward F. Maurina III · 11/02/2010 (4:27 am) · 8 comments

Before I start my post, let me ask a question. "Did anyone here participate in PoV's Challenge?" If so, please post something about your game in response.

Pov's Challenge - October
If you are not familiar with PoV or the Ludum Dare site, then you may not have heard about this challenge. Mike Kasprzak AKA "PoV" maintains the Ludum Dare site which is , well you can read all about the site here. The important detail is that for October, Mike did something different. He challenged folks to become de facto professional developers. In short, make a game in a month and sell at least one copy.

I tried to fulfill this challenge, but started a bit too late (October 21). Because of this, because Mike seems to be going back to regular Competitions and Jams, and because I didn't see any entries mentioned in blogs here, I have decided to re-issue.

Pov's Challenge - November
If you have read this far, then my guess is you like the idea too. So, I propose you join me and take the 'PoV Challenge' for the period from November 1st until December 1st.

Basic* Challenge Rules:

1. Make a game and sell at least one copy by December 1st.
2. Blog about your game here as you work on it and when you finish it.

* More and better details can be found at the Ludum Dare site here.

My Entry: Grind-ER
As mentioned about, I've already started my entry: Grind-ER. This game is an RPG. This would normally be a no-no, but the core of this game revolves around the Grinding aspects and is focused on fast play. I think it will be both familiar and unlike anything you've ever played. That may sound boastful, but it is a goal.

I am using iTorque 2D and constraining myself to a 480x320 resolution. So far, this has had the effect of really focusing on interaction speed and a minimized interface, which are both important facets of my 'fast play' goal.

My first release will be for Windows, then OS X, and finally for iPhone. The iPhone version will be sold outside of this competition. I will only be offering the Windows and OS X versions here.

I'll post more (here and at my site.) as I make additional progress

A level 100 kitten? Do I cower or cuddle?

Good luck with your challenge. :)

Cower. That rabbit^H^H^H^H^H^H kitten's got a mean streak a mile wide.

Sounds like a fun concept.

I was just thinking recently that it would be great if TorquePowered would engage the community in some sort of challenge like this.

But of course, good luck with that!

Hey Edward, I was actually looking forward to reading your next book. Where is it? I've read the other ones. Where is your T3D one?

@All - Thanks for the encouragement! Are you sure you won't join me?

Here is an update video:

for details on this video.

@ JesseL - I'm not actually working on a book right now. I hope this isn't too disappointing, but I am guessing there will be some good work coming out of this effort which should be useful to you.

I'm confused Edward... The October contest has ended and I don't think they're doing another POV Challenge.

Are you hosting the challenge?

@Patrick - Yes, the October event is over and (although I had hopes) he (PoV)did not re-issue the challenge. Also, there will be no official host.

This is an 'in the spirit' kind of challenge. Perhaps my choice of name is confusing things? I intended it as a way to give kudos to PoV.

Whatever the case the goal of this re-issue is to get folks here to give it a shot. i.e. Make and sell a game in a month. I felt like the Torque community didn't really get involved with the last challenge and I know there are many talented and aspiring developers here.

Note: With regards to hosting, since this challenge was re-issued here, Torque Powered is the perfect place to blog about your work. As far as hosting files and selling them, each person is still responsible for that on their own, as was the case in the original contest.

So, for anyone still reading :) if you want to get in on this, go for it. Make a game, work out the details to sell at least on copy using whatever channel best works for you, and get it done. Join the ranks of 'professional Indie developers', both here and elsewhere. That is my goal. (Writing and selling books is one thing, but making games is what I set out to do from the start.)

Cheers,

Ed M.
