Game Dev Needs Analysis Survey

by Dave Young · 09/28/2010 (4:47 pm) · 10 comments

I've created a survey which is aimed to take a snapshot of the current needs of our industry. Your answers will help shape what tools and services will be available to us all in the future!

It covers everything from engines to assets to publishing. And for anything missing, there's a spot at the end to rant and state your opinion about what's needed in the industry to help us be as successful as possible.

Please take a few minutes and share your experiences and frustrations (if any) at the link below!

Myself and your fellow game developers thank you in advance!

Thanks Dave, filled it just now. Is there a chance that you give us some feedback about what you were able to extract from the answers that you've received? I'd be very interested in a wrap-up blog if you ever find the time.

Also, there were some really good questions that need to get a lot more exposure.

A write-up/disclosure of the results of the survey, even in raw format, would be greatly appreciated.

I'll find out. It's primarily intended to expose some real weaknesses which interested investors could pursue. To that end, I've added a contact area to the survey for those who are interested in being contacted by an investor (not a guarantee of contact)

I don't imagine there would be a problem with summarizing and posting some facts.

So, yes, I will follow up with a blog post with the results :)

Also, Konrad, which questions struck a chord with you? That's the important part :)

Thanks Christian, I'll check it out!

To tell the truth, I answered but honestly, I don't see the whole point really. The only thing I need is time. Money comes and goes and with the tools that are around today....given enough time, most anyone with the desire can produce something interesting. I can tell you this much, since I have been in computers and programming (I built my first Sinclair ZX81 computer from a kit) the tools and power available to the 'individual user' has compounded MASSIVELY. Anyway, I am interested in the results but I can't see what your trying to accomplish.

Indie game dev is an industry filled with hopes and dreams and a ridiculous amount of passion and dedication. Some of us try to seriously make a living making games, and others hope to someday, or gain a position working at a big studio. Much like the site you're on now, there are many companies who make products and services to fill in the cracks where the rubber meets the road. As a game dev I am painfully aware of the shortcomings and pitfalls. I am a coder and many other things but find it still so hard to get the right art I need, for example. And there's the end game of game dev: publishing and marketing... certainly a minefield for many.

What I am trying to accomplish is to identify those needs that I know exist, so that actions can be taken to address those things by people who are in the position to take such actions :) I will complete the research and get the results to the interested third party who has requested them, and something good will come of it!
