T2D to T"3D"

Hello everyone...

This is my first post about my journey to convert the T2D to T2.D hehehe.
I'm working in this to solve some "problems" in T2D current axis to develop a correct beat 'em up game like TMNT, Street of Rage, Castle Crasher and the Scott Pilgrim.

In T2D there some greats features to develop a game like this, one of this features is the sprite like the layer axis arrange.

This is amazing if you didn't like to jump xD...
Like this, you are working in a beat 'em up game with T2D, you set the layer arrange to the Y axis and you can walk with the X an Y axis... You run the game and EVERYTHING is amazing :D :D :D...

Now, you have a nice idea, "HEY! LET'S JUMP :D :D :D!"... now the big question, which axis you will manipulate to jump!? YES!!! THE Y AXIS!!! The very same axis you use to move UP and broke our very nice Y axis arrange :'(

Yes, the double rainbow is over...

Ok, now my idea is, convert the T2D to T3D, yes, let's give a new axis to the engine, let's give the Z axis...

Now, with the Z axis, you can walk with X and Z axis, arrange the sprites with the Z axis and JUMP with the Y axis, like any 3D game and solving our little problem and converting the T2D to T2.5D :D

Thanks for reading my first post, please, post your comments, ideas or just say, "hey! don't lose your time with this xD" and if you like, you can follow my twitter too at @TheMonkeyTail.

All the best!

Good stuff. I did something similar to this in the TGB Kart Kit. The X/Y control your location on the track; a separate X/Y control your offset on the screen for things like jumping. :)

Thanks Chris, and yes, I saw the TGB Kart Kit, you probably had a similar problem, like, you can drive your card in two axis and there another one to jump, and you didn't need the kart collide in another one or get a item during the jump... :)

Are you planning on adding the actual z axis to tgb? If so, it might be easier to just use TGE (the older 3d engine) with bilboarded sprites. That way, you can have the z-axis and the look of 2.5d. :-)

Great idea! I hope they pick this to the next release of the engine. I don't think there is something wrong with 3D elements on a 2D engine, it actually makes a lot of sense: just because your jogability is mainly in 2D it doesn't mean that you don't want some depth in it.

@Alain: This is a idea, but, I'm not sure about how good will be the result for small computers and mobiles in performance... But this is just the first feature I'll develop for some future projects :)

@Diego: Me too, I have some problems, even in a 2D game sometimes you need a depth, you can get many examples like TMNT in NES, SNES and Genesis, in a racing game like how Chris said, Super Mario RPG is another good example too... Will be amazing a feature like this in the new T2D :D

I'll send to them... there any suggestion blog here?! :-/

And I'll post the second blog next week ;)
