JOUNCE bounces onto the iPhone!!!!

by Adrian Wright · 08/21/2009 (5:47 pm) · 14 comments

Max Gaming is proud to present a creation out of the mind of Matt Mitman called Jounce which is currently available on the APP store for the iPhone and iPod Touch. This also marks our 2nd APP made with iTGB!!!

Musically bounce your way through over 32000 levels!

Jounce has a simple premise: bounce falling balls to reach the goal. As your score is dependent on how complex of a path you create for the balls to follow, the game can be as easy or difficult as you make it. Add in clean, smooth graphics, and generative music, and you have a game that can range from Zen-like to frantic at your whim.

Designed to be a great way to kill a few minutes or an hour, Jounce levels only take about two minutes, so even if you just have a moment to kill, you can still attempt a new high score!

HOW TO PLAY

The goal is simple – Balls spawn at the top, and fall toward the bottom. As they fall, direct their path towards the Goal by placing musical Bouncers. The more times a ball rebounds off Bouncers, the more points its worth!

Your route to the goal (and your next high score!) is entirely up to you. Want a simple path? One or two bouncers may be plenty to reach the goal, but your score will remain low. To really excel, a less direct path is often best, giving your balls a chance to bounce dozens of times before they reach the goal.

Surprising, it's basically the same idea that I had a few days ago.

Obviously, you got it far before, and your realization is way above what I can achieve !

And the interactive sound is absolutely fabulous. The generative music system reminds me of an old Amiga game I loved : Extase by Cryo.

Very good work, and I hope you a lot of sales.

Thanks everyone. So far, every response we've gotten for the game has been quite positive. In fact, I cant recall anyone saying they didn't like it :).

I'm hoping to have the next update ready to submit sometime in the next couple weeks, which will likely add Open Feint support for online highscores, customization of colors and backgrounds ingame, and better optimized physics (as well as some minor tweaks and fixes).

Now if we could just get it to climb the charts...I'm quite ready to be massively rich ;)

Oh, and if any of ya'll have bought it already, it'd be great if you could rate it, and even better if you'd leave a review. We're a bit shy of those on iTunes so far.

this is fun.
a couple things i'd love to see added -

* free play, where the balls just keep coming, but no score is recorded
* make level 0 be blank - no obstacles
* ability to delete or adjust bouncers
* maybe add a sound when a ball hits an obstacle ?
* maybe make the obstacles look more like blocks than plain black squares ?

another interesting statistic to add per level is the longest time a ball was in play

These probably wont make it into this next update as its essentially done now, but I've added them all to the list of possible changes for future versions.

Free Play is already kinda planned as a future mode, though I'm picturing it more as a Music mode, letting you pick the sound each bouncer makes rather than it being chosen automatically. Along with ability to save/load layouts, scroll player area, etc, seems like it should be possible to make actual songs with it if/when I add that mode.

Deleting/Adjusting bouncers I'm leery of doing, as that seems to make exploiting the high scores quite easy (lock them in a box, let it sit for ages, delete a bouncer to free them). I've had a few ideas for that, such as clearing all active ball scores out when a bouncer is deleted, but I'm not sure if its really necessary.

yeah, i was thinking of free play mostly as Music Mode as well.
sounds like you've got some great ideas there.
are you using AVAudioPlayer or some other framework ?

hm, good point on the exploitability of mutable bouncers.

sound is just handled with the usual torque alxPlay() stuff.
