GarageGames.com Site Update - Feb 25th 2009

by Jacob Fike · 02/25/2009 (12:02 pm) · 21 comments

Well, it's a little later than expected, but here it is! Only a few changes, but they are pretty important.

The goodies:

  • Search overhaul: The search is much faster and less error prone. All forums, blogs, and resources are indexed as they are added or updated.
  • Forum sub-tags: Forums can now have sub-forum-like tags that threads can belong to. These are actually tags, so a thread can belong to multiple sub-tags.
  • Torque Owner label: When it says Torque Owner next to a person's name, you can mouseover it for a list of the engines they own
  • Email Receipts: Successful transactions now send an email receipt
NOTE: The search indexes are being rebuilt, so searches might seem a bit empty for an hour or two.
Please continue to give us feedback.

Search...yes! I can already tell a difference!

One thing I would like you to consider (it may already be there for all I know) is a "Back to search results" link. When I click back, I get an error, have to hit Refresh and then hit Send on the submit form data again? dialog box.

Search seems to be working better, but still need some products added to locations (like iTGB and iTGE etc) to properly allow advanced searching in forums.

Search is much improved... i can actually get results back and it seems not to be missing stuff.

My one complaint is that the results page starts with a ton of "search options" that i have to scroll thru to get to what i'm looking for... my results. I suggest you hide most of all that junk... either on another page or under some dynamic expander area... just give me the results i was looking for.

After spending a frustrating hour trying to find something I KNEW was in the forums this weekend, the new search is GREATLY appreciated.

Will (or does) search index TDN?

Did another quick update to fix the forum list on the advanced search form (so that it includes ALL forums). Also made the form collapsed when showing results.

@William
No, the search does not index TDN.

I just added a bunch of categories to the artist corner to better organize things. Also added Bug Submission categories to each of the private engine forums for people to use.

Great job guys. Now, if we can have a link back when looking at unread forums would be nice. It sucks to click the link for unread threads and after posting, click forums-->unread posts again and again.

All jokes aside, good work. I'm very happy with the way the website works now. One thing I did notice is that on the front page at the bottom and under the heading Company there is a link called About Us
http://www.garagegames.com/company/about
This leads to a 401 Not found. However I was surprised that it gave suggestions to what you might try in case you typed the URL in wrong. While I don't like to see errors of this sort for links, I like the fact that the site doesn't throw up a White Flag and surrender unlike most websites.

much better and the date range is nice, but can you add the ability to sort by the date?
