Torque Developers take Top Honors in Green-Ear Demo Contest

by Leba Lualdi · 02/05/2009 (1:33 pm) · 9 comments

Developers were asked to create a demo game with integrated Green-Ear technology. Entries were judged on:

-Ease of getting up and running
-Usability
-Visual Appeal
-Straight up Fun
and most importantly...
-Demonstrates Green-Ear Functionality

Although Green-Ear works with more than just Torque, its Torque integrated SDK made it an especially attractive option for our winners...both creating their games using Torque Game Engine Advanced.

The top prize, $1000, goes to Dark Frontier by Max Gaming. www.maxgaming.net
Dark Frontier is a space adventure game that is visually stunning and makes good use of Green-Ear's many voice features. With simple controls you can talk to teammates and coordinate an attack on other ships. The indicator lights let you know who is speaking. The Max Gaming team also incorporated the Voice Morphing Feature, giving end users control over the pitch and tempo of their voice, adding an extra dimension to game play.

Adrian Wright, Max Gaming President, had this to say about the Green-Ear experience:
Quote:"Working with the Green-Ear SDK for Torque was a simple and robust solution for adding VoIP into our upcoming title. The voice features are far beyond other similar SDKs, including cool features like custom voice fonts for our players."

The second place, $500 prize, goes to Mach by Ignition Games.www.ignition-games.com www.mach-game.com
This flightsim puts the Mav in Maverick. With stunning graphics and realistic controls, Mach brings home the number 2 slot. The integrated Green-Ear technology allows for a more cohesive team play.

Adam Beer, of Ignition Games, gave the Green-Ear experience a rave review...

Quote:"Green-Ear is one of the best things invented for game developers. Adding the SDK to Torque took 2 minutes and getting it working in the game was also a breeze. Additionally, the support Green-Ear offers is unmatched. Whenever we had a small issue or any question, they would always respond promptly and have very helpful responses. Before we added Green-Ear, the gameplay was just average. There was nothing special about playing online with friends, but now that Green-Ear is installed, there is a huge difference. You are able to talk with your teammates and work together better then ever before. It makes the game 10x more fun."

Congratulations to our winners! Come play these exciting games at the Green-Ear booth at the GDC in San Francisco, March 23-27.

@Dave

Speaking for MGT we definately want to have our Dark Frontier demo available for download sometime soon. There are a couple of bugs we want to reduce and of course since we based the game off of the work we did for Lore Aftermath there's still some redundent Lore specific code and art we need to remove (which will help with the download). Unfortunately we are completing a couple of priority items at the moment so that might not be for a week or two.

@Leba

Thanks for the contest, it was a lot of fun to come up with something that we felt would really utilize the Green Ear tech (and of course fit into our budget and our team's desire to make a flight sim style game).

Please let your team know we really appreciated using the Green Ear tech and seeing all the great possibilities that are available out of the box with the system. It's far beyond just simple VoIP for games.

As for Ignition Games, we are in the same boat as MGT. I would like to have the demo distributed, but there has to be some further work and testing done.

Cool, guys :)

I've been trying out G-EAR for a couple of days... and it's just amazing how responsive and how good sounds are coming through. It's better than the voice comm system used in Left 4 Dead, IMO.

I'm looking forward to developing with it.

Thanks for all the positive feedback everybody! We will definitely have the games available to play at the GDC booth and when everyone is ready (including us- we are doing some site redesign, again) we will definitely have a section of the new www.green-ear.com site where we feature Green-Ear enabled games.
