Poll : Linux Support
by Jeremy Easoz · 01/30/2009 (11:11 am) · 19 comments
I was planning on taking a trip to a far away place to do some research for the weekend, just me, my laptop, and no interruptions.
But something came up.
Luckily this gives me the chance to fully prepare
and/or not waste my time.
I'm going to post this blog/poll and come back and check it
Thursday Feb 5th before I leave on my trip.
Poll Question:
How many of you would like native client/server Linux support.
Comment with product rating and two distributions of Linux
you are interested in or use regularly. (Main/Backup)
Example Reply
1 - TGEA
2 - TGB
1 - Ubuntu
2 - Fedora

I'd love to have it, but I definitely don't want to work on it. Really, the only way this will happen is for an interested Linux developer to step forward and do the necessary work. IMO it's not that feasible to expect GG to invest that much time and effort into something they'll get zero return on. All that said, the port has never been easier, given the new GFX layer.

I would be happy to contribute time to this effort, but in terms of doing it myself I don't know where to start, or what has to be done. If someone were to give me bite-sized chunks, as if they were small programming contracts, I could shuffle it in with my normal work.

Owning TGB actually forced my hand at leaving linux a couple years ago. While I am perfectly happy now on a mac, I would love to release for linux.

To be honest at a minimum there should be dedicated servers support for linux Prolly Red-Hat as that is what most servers are that or some derivative. It blows my mind that The engine has gone this long without this built in. If memory serves correct there was a linux dedicated server for Tribes 2, was there not?

At one point in time Torque Game Engine supported Windows/Linux/MacOSX.
Around the time TSE/TGEA started up they dropped Linux support.
This has nothing to do with GG so no idea where any of that mess came from. This will be on my time and my money.
It also depends on response.
No worth while response means i'll do something else
with my research vacation.

For me, I would want to be able to run dedicated servers on Linux. Client support is not that important to me.

That would be a given...
You might be thinking about this a little to hard.
The server already works on Linux. You just might have to kick it a little
like any other GarageGames product.
The point is to make it equal across all platforms client and server.
Heres the deal.
With the current economy, game companies falling by the dozens every day,
Microsoft just axed 1600 employees with another 4400 hundred leave after that.
Windows 7 being Windows Vista RC2 and still sucking ass.
I think this will be the year that Linux will shine.
Plus i'm at the point in my life where I no longer enjoy doing things that suck.
Microsoft Windows sucks.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 Beta sucks.
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 is the Windows ME of development tools.
I could go on and on.
But I won't.
Instead I ask you the community about Linux support.
If the interest is high enough then I might do the work
so I can get the fuck away from windows and help the community
at the sametime.
Otherwise i'm just going to go back and serve my country
and fight more pointless wars, write flash games, and program
Linux UI stuff for the rest of my life.
So you deceide.

At least the server side should have already been taken care of... Running windows servers for any multiplayer game is just not within the indie budget.

I would really like it if the server could be run as a script via command line (not everyone cares about having a GUI to the server and just wants to host a game).
