Somebody loves it

by Apparatus · 01/21/2009 (4:02 am) · 15 comments

Somebody loves hacking, don't know exactly what feels one when at work (computer geek love or banal hate towards bad looking websites), thus my confusion, should I title this somebody loves it or somebody hates it?

To cut the long story short, editmygame.com is parked for repairs for a while. Hope it's gonna be short; I am planning to move it from godad** as well. It's really not a big deal since only the joo***! install was affected but still, got me all pissed for the remaining of the week.

edit: I decided to go for somebody loves it : )

Sorry to hear that App... That's pretty much the backside of open source solutions. The guy was probably looking for any site created with that system, so I don't think it was someone who knew about your work nor that it was personal. That's how it usually goes.. They search for a version string and make use of a vulnerability - for fun.

When you set your new site up, be sure to get vulnerabilities news through some newsgroup or something if you can, and try updating the site with each stable version. That is a pretty solid way of making others more favorable targets.

Let me know if I can help you in any way.

Were you using Joomla? I heard of a couple sites getting hit recently that used it. I like Joomla, just need to make sure have the latest versions I suppose :)

Back when I ran my own commercial website, I had this happen about once or twice a year. I finally switched over to windows on my servers, and turned on automatic updates.

ugh, open source ! Customize that shiznit yo!

- Change the location of the config file(s)
- add a prefix to your tables
- change the administration page location
- take evasive action with your own ideas of relocating susceptible code(hide it)
- top it with fudge

Customize the open source cms a bit and you will most likely avoid the issue again. Oh and avoid that last idea.

I was gonna host my site with "g***ddy" a while back, but I'm the cautios type, and did some research on them beforehand, they seem to have a rep for being hacked. luckely I went with another, more expensive host. be warned about it.

GoDaddy is pretty bad. In terms of hacking I have no idea but there control panel is beyond. I find 1and1 to be the best low cost solution and it has a really good control panel.

Got to hate that... had it happen a couple of times myself over the years, although touch wood I've been fine for a good while now.

There was a security update released for Joomla a week or so ago, did you have that in place? (Edit: I seem to recall you were using Joomla?)

That sucks Apparatus. We've had it happen to us in the past... it took me weeks to get everything back to normal.

Sorry to hear about that. But that's just a fact with websites, eh? At least nothing major happened.

Really good "be back soon" artwork!

And whats about all those "*" in Joomla and Godaddy?

If your looking for another host, I second 1and1.com

I third 1and1.com

They have a very good control panel and it's extremely easy to navigate and use...
Hate to hear about the Jmla hack. . (Im runn'in to update some installs . _ ___.....)

Sorry to hear it Apparatus... hopefully you had backups.

Correction... that's pretty much the backside of any software exposed to the Internet. Period. Doesn't matter if it's open source or closed.

In this case I can pretty much guarantee Apparatus simply didn't keep his Joomla up to date. It's had its security flaws but they're generally patched up very quickly.

I can certainly understand that, just try not to let 'em keep you down.
