With the exclusive first release of the complete to the GarageGames Community, I would like to share the behind the scenes games development story of this fun small games title.

Back in the 1990's I used to develop quite a few Commodore 64 games and as you can see from the snapshot above; I focused on the gameplay, more than the graphics side. A fun, fast, & addictive game-play was my goal and for a long time I wanted to make a real update but sadly the Commodore 64 days were no more for creating new games (myself anyway but still many out there today doing just that!).

In summer 2005, a very bright & talented group of students passed through my door in my previous company and together we blasted out a brand new modern version of Spike! During the two months of development, the students have never been involved in games development before but even without this experience, they went beyond my expectations.

This first month was hard; the team aimed too high and made all the classic mistakes of beginning games development where the key important part & for any new developers in the community to remember is to scale back your plans to the core set of game-play elements, levels and goals. It is important to have a design when starting out but that design will get worked on as when the development is meeting milestone, after milestone and always the last 10% of the development is the hardest; it is the crunch time period!

In the last month of development, the team learnt the hard lessons and worked as a team with a single goal, to build a fun game based on an old design. As you can see from the snapshot above, a special launch event was hosted that showed off Spike Dash to the public, plus fellow game developers.

Forward onto winter 2007 and Spike Dash comes out of the woodwork from never being released to getting a lick of paint, game improvements and to just polish off the title which there was only a short window of time to do this and once again, the title was rushed through the door. It was either to leave the 2005 version locked away forever or get what can be done and let the game go public world-wide. In December 2007, the game was released for $19.99

January 2009 and many things have changed with Riverplay Games, all good changes that can not be seen right now but over the next few months you will see what we are cooking up with the 14 Tribes as well the big title, Terra: Formations. With this in mind and the new look GarageGames with the soon to be released T3D, I have decided to take the price tag off and release Spike Dash for Free to you, the community members of GarageGames.

I hope you enjoy playing the game and many hours of fun game-play. A fun simple game that I always wanted to release to you. Thanks for reading! Please join the community forums if you like to talk about it!

Thanks for the comments, do let me know how your Hi-Score goes! :)

Sean: In the last two minutes I have re-checked the game and the exe install file is sitting on the server, I downloaded it and after the install, the game exe file is there. The game does work :)
Please email me directly if you still have any problems and double check your net / browser settings to make sure you can download a exe file. I am more than happy to help you.
