New Torque3D forums, take 42
Hey guys, as some of you probably already know, I've set up a new forum over here forums.torque3d.org. As you can see, the url looks pretty official, and the SC seems to be willing to move over there. Back me up here guys!
So why move to a new forum? Frankly, this has been requested for months, but inertia has kept the community here. I think the combination of the increased and persistent amount of spam on the forums and other website issues will give the community the push needed to move over to a new website.
So what will the new forum have of new features?
Proper forum software!
Yes, now we can create proper forums and subforums with custom-tailored permissions. The SC can have a forum all to themselves and we can create whatever new forums we need, which brings us to the next point:The community is in control!
We decide what happens, we decide what features we want, we decide the design who gets banned, promoted or whatever.Proper TorqueScript syntax highlighting!
With control comes power, and that power can be used to highlight TorqueScript properly on our pages! No more spam!!!!!
Yes, you heard me. Now we have proper moderators, and proper anti-spam features. We will work actively to make sure the spam is removed and prevented on a regular basis. It's already active!
With over 140 posts, and 40 members you aren't entering a solitary desert. There is already activity over there!Modern design
We have modern Torque3D-theme on the forums, which looks nice and fits into the general Torque3D design used on other websites. This ensures consistency and ofc we have control over how it looks if we want to change it in the future. Furthermore, you can choose or request what style you want to view the website in, if you don't like the current look.Hello Kitty!

Q.E.D.
Ofc there are many more features/reasons to move, I just highlighted the highlights heh, to keep it short (I know your attention span :P).
See you on the other side!

If there somewhere is relevant content for Torque and it has enough traffic and reference from known sites with reputation, it will pick up in a matter of days.
On the new forum and site we have more control and can add new features and content faster.

SEO is not that relevant anymore, algorithms have become better and cannot be fooled that easy anymore. If there somewhere is relevant content for Torque and it has enough traffic and reference from known sites with reputation, it will pick up in a matter of days.

That is really not correct as what you state:
That is actually also SEO. Make your site having the relevant stuff or words on it(not only meta tags but actual contents) ;O)
Hence this is one of several reasons(and hence not the only one ;O) ) that GG holds such a high score for the word "Torque".
The algorithms you talk about also take into account what you research history is and what interests you seem to have. In other words what you are presented with can vary a little according to regions and your unique search pattern.
I am amazed how little some of you actual know about what Google and other search engines store and use your information for.
Try learn some Ajax language for example. That would be a good basic start to see how info is stored and later can be used to present options and search suggestions according to certain words.
Well I am out of this thread. Not relevant to inform about what some simple google etc. search can show you.

Can we steer this back on topic? Back and forth debate on SEO is irrelevant to the blog content.

The comment Mich reacted to was sarcastic and it was aimed at the community not GG at all. Personally I would prefer more direction from GG and not less as they have been in games development for years and understand about how to promote the engines, at the moment it seems to have become all academic where all effort is spent on code changes and none on keeping the engines publicised.

@Dwarf king - none of my comments were attacks on GG at all. In point of fact I trust Mich and GG to handle the community for these game engines better than anyone else. My entire point is that now GG are changing things there is no need for the other forums at all. The comment Mich reacted to was sarcastic and it was aimed at the community not GG at all. I was not planing to come back to this thread but your originally comment was a little out of line here.
You originally wrote:
And then you edited it(fair enough). Well have a look what you wrote in an earlier post:
I never liked the word "screwed". You might re-read what you write before pointing fingers. In fact I believe in a civilized debate. Should we keep the tone civilized?
Well I'll let that stand for it self. I wish you all a nice weekend.

StuporMundi and Dwarf King - Okie dokie. Looks like you two come to an understanding now. Think this line of discussion is finished and we can all get back on topic?

As for driving traffic - the torque3d.org set of sites is maturing quite nicely, so soon the SC will probably have to contact GG and see if we can do something about the T3D product page, which is still the top Google result for "torque 3d". Though several torque3d.org sites are near the top of that search already, at least for me.

Quote:I wouldn't state that there is a great deal going on at the new forums and if posts and blogs get less and less frequent, which will happen in a small community, it will go into a vicious circle and eventually it will all dry up. Not to mention that new arrivals get less and less. The problems with increasing the user base do not lie in forums with a bit of spam. Why would the new forums have fewer and fewer posts? And why would not moving to new forums mean that the amount of activity would not decrease? The activity in the community will remain as long as people are using the engine, developing it, and talking about it, and why not do that on a modern forum that we have control over?

Hey all! Well, just wanted to chine in. Normally, I would do a full blog but, I think I can keep this fairly simple....
Who Cares? Seriously, who cares? I am an active member of THIS site AND WOW!! OMG.... I am ALSO an active member of the dot org site as well. Ya know what... I guess (according to this thread... I know TWICE as much as anyone else!!) Don't I wish that were true.
SERIOUSLY, in the end, we are ALL a group of people that enjoy working with the same tool set. I choose to share info in multiple sites (including my own site (shameless plug.... 3tdstudios.com!!!) Let us not focus on 'splitting' up the community because (FREAKIN A) we are all just a hyperlink away. Share, post in both sites if you want. Post in ONE site, who cares as long as the news gets out? I like this community and don't care... Heck, I feel bad for not spending more time on Torque dot net! (just a joke at the dot net member's expense, sorry guys!) Though I should have gone there way more often, don't know why I didn't....)
Look, T3D is T3D.... You all have put up with my praises and total AS*HOL* rants, as we have with many members. Game dev is both a frustrating and rewarding task. I have tried lately, to be more 'tolerant' when it comes to community input. Not always gonna be perfect but, now I have way more places to check and try to be a bit of a help. This is ALWAYS a good thing. Information being spread across multiple sources... in Military intel we call that 'SCI' Stands for Separate Compartmented Information.... We use that so that NO one person has everything but, the information is available if needed. It's a good thing.
Just my 2 cents on this.

Somewhat on topic, somewhat off topic: Richard Ranft and Nathan Martin are now moderators for this website (GG.com). They cleaned up the spam just now and will be able to from here on. I will also help. So at any point if Richard, Nathan, or I see spam, it will be nuked.Carry on.
