Community Contest #9 - Multiplayer

Okay - we had a bit of a disappointing drop off in entries for the Military Training contest. However - with the success on the Breakout winner and the Military Training winners we know that playable entries is something we want to do.

Before coming to GG, I spent 6 years working for a small e-learning company that developed Microsoft Office training courses. We had a group of 8-12 guys that would log on for lunch every day to play Call of Duty 2. We would play a couple rounds of capture the flag, followed by a couple of rounds of team death match. Internally tracked, cumulative running leader boards made this some serious inter office competition. I miss the camaraderie and competition of those lunch time battles but it brings me to a great contest idea.

"Give us the best multiplayer experience for a small group of 4-8 (maybe even up to 12-15) people"

That's it. You take it from there. Military theme - ok, Fantasy theme - ok, My Little Pony theme - hmmm, well, maybe not the best chance of winning. Team death match, death match, strategy, again that is up to you.

We are not expecting polished or bug free entries. We do want to be able to launch and play the game but we know what Beta and even Alpha stages of a game look like.

So here are the dirty details:

Plenty of time - entries aren't due for a month - Friday May 25th.

To encourage more entries - there will be a winner (or winning team if you pair up) for every 4 entries. If 12 people put up their stuff - we will give away 3 awards.

Some IRL stuff came up, I never got anything together for this. Maybe next time.

Okay here is the deal. It is a holiday weekend in the US (Memorial Day). So I am extending the submission deadline until 10PM PDT tonight. Then I will post dropbox links for all of the submissions and we can take the weekend to play them and the winner(s) will be announced Tuesday when I get back into the office.

We have determined a winner - Besieged. Ebonixs and John each get a prize.

It was not an easy decision - Invade Borg has an AMAZING start for a game and having bots in place was a positive along with the ability to drive.

GLOVES was also a fun play but a lot of computers had a graphics card problem and couldn't launch/play the game.

Ultimately the overall play ability and music of Besieged garnered a majority of the votes to win.

I will have contest #10 up this coming Friday during community power hour.

Ty GG, for this contest and gratz to Ebonixs and John.

It was a great experiance to make a multiplayer game within 4 weeks. It was a hard work to do that, and i believe all other contestands hade the same fun:) The hardest part for me, was coding the game. Im more a Level designer. The last week was only bug fixes. A lot bugs i find only by testing with some friends. So i was test Invade Borg with a friend from US and one from norwegian to be sure everything work ok via internet.

At least, im thinking to make a real game with Invade Borg. But for that part, i really need some one help my, to code some parts to be better. So, if some one is intrested in helping and sharing Invade Borg, i would be more as happy:)

The Game will be availlable at the link, given in this thread. Also i let the master server run, so ppl can connect to a running game.

At the moment i got the Zombie feever and be at making a little game with the Zombie resource as basic. Also like allways i use some of the demolition packs from www.game3d.ch for this.

I never expected to actually win, I thought D Fasels game was more complete and I actually got to play it multiplayer and enjoyed it.
Daniels idea was very novel, and I had a good run about the level but never actually got the chance to play against anyone.

Again thanks.. made my day :)

Congrats, guys!

Geoff: any details on that graphics card error? I'd really like to be able to fix that! Not sure what could be going wrong, since the game was mostly stock T3D1.1 from the Empty template! Well, with a few tweaks, of course, but nothing related to GFX as far as I remember.

D Fasel: haha, I found the opposite - I'm more of a coder! Just getting a character imported from Blender was a massive headache :P. But it was a fantastic experience to delve into that side of creating a game - I'm now so much more knowledgeable about that half of things.

EDIT: And, far too late, I remember that old TRON lightcycle game. Porting that up would have been amazing :D.

@ Jonajoint: It is hard to get ppl togheter to the same time to play Invade Borg. I would like too, to gaming against more people.
Now i made the game open for publique, hopefully more ppl will join to game it. I see on the server if some one open a game, so i will join to this. Exept i be at working or busy.

Cant wait to fight a big war:)

may be those tweaks has created this error:
"AntiAliasing has been disabled; it is not compatible with AdvancedLighting."

i also had that error after changing different video settings related function(all in script).it just crash the app or make the skin to flick.
