November Update

by Eric Preisz · 11/11/2010 (7:00 pm) · 1042 comments

Today, InstantAction informed employees that it will be winding down operations. While we are shutting down the InstantAction.com website and Instant Jam game, Torquepowered.com will continue to operate while InstantAction explores opportunities with potential buyers for Torque. We thank all of our past and current customers for their support.

Ouch, totally out of the blue. Deep condolences to everyone. The phrase "End of an era" has never been more fitting...

@James: I'm in a similar situation, but since we already froze our base development version (we stopped merging new updates at beta 2) this doesn't affect us much (at least technically speaking), but planned future license extensions (ex: consoles) are now at dark.

what is with the character limit all of the sudden

I would but I like Torque 3D, And if they still allow me to work with the engine and sell my work after they shut down(if the engine/engines don't get pick up by someone else) then I really don't need a refund. Maybe a discount if the new owners charge for a update.

It sucks to see GarageGames go. My thoughts are with the peeps losing their jobs.

GarageGames went a while ago

Thats what the 'current' torque powered branding is though. and to be honest, its nothing more then an 'asset' of instantaction's.

Torque wont just disappear into the ether, its an asset that can be sold to recoup losses for IA in the winding down process.

Isn't GarageGames Louis Castle's part of InstantAction/Torque? That shut down as well.

I guess InstantJam flopped.

@Michael Perry:
you guys should have gotten the basic answers down and posted them in the blog before dropping a bomb like that with no answers.

Wow, just wow..... I'll lift a pint for all of you tonight.

@James - News leaks fast. Information was being posted elsewhere in IRC and chats, so we had to get a blog up fast so you heard it from us first.

We are doing the best we can. This hit us like a brickwall today, so I repeat: calm down and we will post answers as we get them.

@James, this is your fault for counting on the future for a project you have today. You use what you have TODAY for projects you are working on TODAY.

You are really an pretty insensitive jerk here. These guys just found out today they possibly have no jobs.

Really sad to hear this news, especially as sudden as it seems to be. Hopefully, Torque gets picked up by another company and things can continue.

Just get our licensing squared away and we will be happy campers...

This is the type of thing that makes us not like having logo and splash screen requirements.

and who do we send written notice to now when we release?

People have been hit on both sides, those with investors/clients that have paid up front, or depend on it for paying the bills and the employees that have moved thousands of miles to be told they may no longer have a job unless a buyer can be found. Lets ride it out for a bit and see where it goes and wait for those answers.

Wow, very sorry to hear that. I've been a member of this community and developing on TGE for over five years. I'm getting close to beta myself, and I was really looking forward to announcing it here. Hope you guys all land on your feet.

Gack!

Wow, kinda blindsided there... I'm sure you TP guys feel the same.

There has been a feeling of instability from my perspective since IA bought GG out, but honestly GG/TP was never the most focused (prob why I stuck through so long, I totally relate). The market is changing faster than ever, it's easy to be put down if it even looks like you're limping.

Good luck guys! I know there will be plenty of brain cells killed tonight.

Can't wait to read Jeff's blog on this one.

Hey Everyone. We will be posting a general Q&A in the next 24 hours.

We will also be doing our best to answer questions in support@torquepowered.com and licensing@torquepowered.com over the next days and weeks.

Everyone can continue to work on their projects as per the EULA that you have agreed to.

Hope you can all find work and like others have mentioned if you are using Torque3D (and possibly Torque2D) it was extremely close to the final build and is at a pretty stable state to continue to use it. The key thing is maybe documentation if you still didn't know it very well and where waiting on that. I don't think there where any features promised that haven't been put in thus far.
It is surely worlds ahead of where it was before AI picked it up.

Thank you all for your hard work, hope you all can find jobs. There was some really good talent working there. I also hope a promising buyer can pick it up.
