Web Site Update

It’s 3:05 am PST and we just finished the most recent upgrade to the site. As a game programmer ( semi-retired ) web deployment makes me nervous. I don’t get that comfy chair, worn-in baseball glove, feeling that I get from the technology domains that feel more like home to me. Luckily, I’ve been able to calm my nerves with few slices of bacon covered pizza. So far, we made it through the update without any major issues. Thanks a million to those in the associate’s forum who spent their free time beta testing for us when they could have been working on their games:
Special Thanks: Fyodor "bank" Osokin Joseph Euan Michael Hall Tom Spillman Konrad Kiss David Montgomery-Blake Ted Southard Giuseppe De Francesco |
Thanks guys!
The site changes will seem relatively small at first glance, so I’ve put this blog together to help point out some of the foundational changes that make this update a bigger one than you might notice at first glance.
One of my tenants is that bad news should be delivered first, so let’s get that out of the way. You have sent us a lot of web related bug reports and changes and we didn’t cover many of them in this update. Our focus on this round is more about updating systemic business related updates. If we don’t fix those systemic issues, they will undermine all other aspects of how we do business. We’ve been doing a lot of this over the past few weeks and we are slowly raising the tide for more positive future changes. Functionality fixes to come, please hang in there.
So let’s dive into the update:
Brand – Last year we announced that we were retiring the GarageGames name for most of our businesses ( the game studio occasionally uses the GG name ). This is bittersweet change for sure. I have a fondness for the name and more so for the ideology behind the name. As do many, many, people for whom the name GarageGames touched. But the reality is that we are a very different company. Some say better; some say worse -but in the end we are definitely different. Switching to the Torque brand is recognition of that change and a new identity that we can use to move forward with on future projects. You will notice a new logo that contains the phrase “By InstantAction” which helps people understand that we are a part of a bigger company with a broader focus. We are three divisions: Tools & Engine, Game Studio, and Platform. You know what this division does, but you may not be aware of the others. The game studio is very busy working on high-end socially driven games and the Platform is building the next generation of services (achievements, e-commerce, etc.) that modern gamers expect. | ![]() |
Studio Licensing – For a long time we have not given the public visibility into the pricing for studio licenses. Studio licenses are seat licenses rather than licenses that are tied to a given individual and in the past we only offered them via direct sales. If you own a studio license, you will notice that you have a new tab in your account named “My Studio”. | ![]() |
Under this tab you can reassign studio licenses to any other individual who has an account on the site. When you assign a license, your studio name will display under their avatar. This is the first of many ideas we’ve discussed to help your studio build its own brand. Expect to see more and more studio services and functionality over the next couple of years. An upgrade from an individual license to a studio licenses is being offered for a promotional price of $25 per upgrade.
EULA – We’ve updated our EULA for all of our engines (third party products are not part of the uber EULA ). Prior to this change we had different EULAs for each product line which made it difficult to manage and difficult for our users to understand. By consolidating we are making the licensing easier on all involved. We are open to your feedback so if you have any questions regarding the changes, feel free to contact us licensing@torquepowered.com.
Product Names – If you’ve been around the company for a while you know that naming products hasn’t always been our strength ( you might remember the TAT incident ). We’ve done a lot better in recent years, but there is still some confusion when we talk about future vs. current products. To solve this problem we are adding a year designation to our product names. A year denotes a major change in the software. For example, the Torque 3D that you know today is now known as Torque 3D 2009. If we made a major change in the software (typically an editor upgrade or major value increase), we would likely update the year to denote the dramatic upgrade ( i.e. Torque 3D 2011 ). Updates will be delivered as service packs. Torque 3D 2011 SP3. That sounds cool. We will be migrating products to this naming convention over the next couple of releases.
Over the next few weeks, we have a series of blogs that we have been waiting to deliver. Keep checking the site for new updates and news related to all of the work we’ve been doing over the past couple of months. Until then, feel free to post any site bugs related to these changes in this thread. Also, we have our web developer monitoring the live chat system in the bottom right hand corner to help you if you get stuck over the next couple of days. There will be bugs, but we will do our best to fix them ASAP.
Thanks everyone!

We are currently working on the studio upgrade bug, so that's probably why you're seeing the price discrepancy.
@Bloodknight
You should be able to purchase both source and professional licenses as studio and then assign them. You will need to assign the license to the member of your studio using it (you).
We are looking into the forum issue for Torque 3D licensees as well.

Sooo we have been able to download source for $25 and we were not suppose to.
They are fixing it so do not attempt to do anything at least until they get it all fixed.
You do not get source or binary for $25, it is just for a "studio" extras like name in forums. Thats is all the $25 gets you. If you own Pro or Binary then you can assign versions of what you own to members of your team for $25.

Quick run down, there was a bug that allowed people to buy the $25 pro version of studio even if you never bought the original $1000 pro source version..Sooo we have been able to download source for $25 and we were not suppose to.

I do not want the studio tag. I thought its the source for both. What do I do? Does this mean I lose my $50.
Edit: I also chatted to a "Sales" department employee who said that its fine that I can purchase a studio pro even without owning t2d.
Am not trying to gain something unfairly, but I tried to find out and purchased accordingly.

Well, I do do not want that.I had the binary individual t3d. I purchased studio versions for both T3D and T2D. I do not want the studio tag. I thought its the source for both. What do I do? Does this mean I lose my $50.

We are working on a refund solution for the confusion.
You can purchase a studio license just like you can purchase individual licenses. The $25 is only for studio upgrades. The studio license is more depending on the type of license you are purchasing. This is a deal for those teams who have supported us with purchases in the past and are looking for a way to manage their licenses.

Thanks for working with us, hopefully everyone will be patient. :)

@Everyone - The issue with the auto-discount should be fixed. We are verifying that everything is in order. On our quick pass, it looks OK. If you purchased Torque 3D Studio for $25 and you don't really want the functionality of studio, we will offer you a refund. You can still upgrade later if you decided that you do want to functionality of re-assigning the license.

Thanks for acting on it quick. :)

As long as those who were confused & purchased (like me) are refunded, it should be cool. Thanks for acting on it quick. :)

I (programmer A) have a T3D pro license and I start a new project. I decide I want to get some help (programmer B), so I upgrade to the studio license.
Does that upgrade price give programmer B access to the product to download and help me with me build?
If this does NOT get me access for another developer, then how much would it cost me to get programmer B access to the product and code? Is it another $25 studio license? Or does programmerB have to purchase a license using their own account?
Still a bit confused...

Can we work through a simple scenario? I'm not sure if I want or need a studio upgrade.I (programmer A) have a T3D pro license and I start a new project. I decide I want to get some help (programmer B), so I upgrade to the studio license.
Does that upgrade price give programmer B access to the product to download and help me with me build?
if (yes) cool = true;

The difference is that license can be floated to another person ( but when you float it to someone, you no technically longer have a license yourself ).
What you probably want is your own license and possibly another studio license. That way you can pass that license to someone and when they are done, you can pass it again to someone else. For an individual, this may not make sound like a good deal, but for a studio it can save them thousands as people come and go and rotate across teams.

@Ron - In the above scenario, you still only have one license because when you upgrade, you convert your individual pro to individual studio. The difference is that license can be floated to another person ( but when you float it to someone, you no technically longer have a license yourself ).

@Eric - What about Torque 2D Studio?

We are going to make the default behavior be an auto assign on purchase and upgrade. I'm surprised we didn't run into this in our usability tests as it seems like a silly speed bump. Thanks for the feedback.
It will work for source as well. We have it enabled for all products on the site. We've been selling studio licenses like this for a while internally, we just didn't have it exposed to the web-site and now we do.

Quote:Is this normal that i have to add myself and assign myself the pro licenese if so then perhaps a note on the my studio page might not be a bad idea.

Quote:My second question, are all additional seats binary licenses, or is there an option for source seats? I'm not actually interested in a source seat for the forseable future, however i'm just curious really.

so who or what do we contact for a refund, yes I would like one. Thanks!

I'm (currently) only allowed 1 T3D license because I'm on an individual user license. But if I upgrade mine to a studio license, then the site interface will allow me to add another studio license (which I'd pay full price for).
I see. So I'm not so much saving money as I'm keeping my licenses allocated to my "studio" and not to the individuals that went through the shop and purchase process.
Still though...I think it'd be worth the $25 upgrade just to float a studio name underneath my nameplate. ;)
Thanks, Eric!

I would like a refund too. Will delete the source code of both the engines and will delete the T2D binary too.

@Ron - Correct. The Studio name is cool, but we plan on adding more functionality as well. There really are special needs for studios and we've always treated them as individuals. Now we have the ability to meet studio and individual's needs.
Slowly and over time, the studio will grown with more and more functionality that studios need. This will give us an opportunity to have a feature delta pricing model that makes sense. I don't really like the idea of the feature delta to be in the product. A feature delta in services that you probably don't need as an individual -that makes more sense to me.

I upgraded to studio which is fine.
but i purchased what i considered to be a seat license (because thats what it said) which gave me the ability to assign temporarily the ability for a 2nd dev (in this case my son) the ability to use the binary version of T3d to do level editing and such on my current project.
Are you saying that what i in fact purchased was a buggily priced version of T3D binary? If that is teh case then i'd certainly like to take you up on the offer of discussing possible refunds.
Another question arises however (unsure because of discounts having disappeared from the site) would it not make some kind of sense to offer discounted products to studio licenced holders so that they could buy a 2nd pro copy at a discount and a couple of binaries at discount say.

I still have access to Torque X 2D (I'm a licensed owner of this), but when I click the nameplate under my avatar image, it only shows Torque 3D in my list of owned products.
Seems like this should probably be fixed. Specifically with regards to Torque X which has tons of valuable community work. Normally Pino checks the user's profile to ensure they own Torque X before giving them access to updates.

That is the case Marc, you can temporarily assign it to your son. But there is a throttle on the number of reassigns in a give 30 day window. We can add reassigns to you manually if you accidentally reassign too many times. We don't want big firms abusing this feature. We may need to zero in on the appropriate number or reassigns based on feedback.
