It’s 3:05 am PST and we just finished the most recent upgrade to the site. As a game programmer ( semi-retired ) web deployment makes me nervous. I don’t get that comfy chair, worn-in baseball glove, feeling that I get from the technology domains that feel more like home to me. Luckily, I’ve been able to calm my nerves with few slices of bacon covered pizza. So far, we made it through the update without any major issues. Thanks a million to those in the associate’s forum who spent their free time beta testing for us when they could have been working on their games:

Special Thanks:
Fyodor "bank" Osokin
Joseph Euan
Michael Hall
Tom Spillman
Konrad Kiss
David Montgomery-Blake
Ted Southard
Giuseppe De Francesco

Thanks guys!

The site changes will seem relatively small at first glance, so I’ve put this blog together to help point out some of the foundational changes that make this update a bigger one than you might notice at first glance.

One of my tenants is that bad news should be delivered first, so let’s get that out of the way. You have sent us a lot of web related bug reports and changes and we didn’t cover many of them in this update. Our focus on this round is more about updating systemic business related updates. If we don’t fix those systemic issues, they will undermine all other aspects of how we do business. We’ve been doing a lot of this over the past few weeks and we are slowly raising the tide for more positive future changes. Functionality fixes to come, please hang in there.

So let’s dive into the update:

Brand – Last year we announced that we were retiring the GarageGames name for most of our businesses ( the game studio occasionally uses the GG name ). This is bittersweet change for sure. I have a fondness for the name and more so for the ideology behind the name. As do many, many, people for whom the name GarageGames touched. But the reality is that we are a very different company. Some say better; some say worse -but in the end we are definitely different. Switching to the Torque brand is recognition of that change and a new identity that we can use to move forward with on future projects.

You will notice a new logo that contains the phrase “By InstantAction” which helps people understand that we are a part of a bigger company with a broader focus. We are three divisions: Tools & Engine, Game Studio, and Platform. You know what this division does, but you may not be aware of the others. The game studio is very busy working on high-end socially driven games and the Platform is building the next generation of services (achievements, e-commerce, etc.) that modern gamers expect.

Studio Licensing – For a long time we have not given the public visibility into the pricing for studio licenses. Studio licenses are seat licenses rather than licenses that are tied to a given individual and in the past we only offered them via direct sales. If you own a studio license, you will notice that you have a new tab in your account named “My Studio”.

static.torquepowered.com/static/upload/emp-59817/Studio.png

Under this tab you can reassign studio licenses to any other individual who has an account on the site. When you assign a license, your studio name will display under their avatar. This is the first of many ideas we’ve discussed to help your studio build its own brand. Expect to see more and more studio services and functionality over the next couple of years. An upgrade from an individual license to a studio licenses is being offered for a promotional price of $25 per upgrade.

static.torquepowered.com/static/upload/emp-59817/ericP.png

EULA – We’ve updated our EULA for all of our engines (third party products are not part of the uber EULA ). Prior to this change we had different EULAs for each product line which made it difficult to manage and difficult for our users to understand. By consolidating we are making the licensing easier on all involved. We are open to your feedback so if you have any questions regarding the changes, feel free to contact us licensing@torquepowered.com.

Product Names – If you’ve been around the company for a while you know that naming products hasn’t always been our strength ( you might remember the TAT incident ). We’ve done a lot better in recent years, but there is still some confusion when we talk about future vs. current products. To solve this problem we are adding a year designation to our product names. A year denotes a major change in the software. For example, the Torque 3D that you know today is now known as Torque 3D 2009. If we made a major change in the software (typically an editor upgrade or major value increase), we would likely update the year to denote the dramatic upgrade ( i.e. Torque 3D 2011 ). Updates will be delivered as service packs. Torque 3D 2011 SP3. That sounds cool. We will be migrating products to this naming convention over the next couple of releases.

Over the next few weeks, we have a series of blogs that we have been waiting to deliver. Keep checking the site for new updates and news related to all of the work we’ve been doing over the past couple of months. Until then, feel free to post any site bugs related to these changes in this thread. Also, we have our web developer monitoring the live chat system in the bottom right hand corner to help you if you get stuck over the next couple of days. There will be bugs, but we will do our best to fix them ASAP.

Thanks everyone!

way to stick the guys that paid $1000 for it! Now I feel like an idiot for paying $100 for binary.

First it doesn't do web deployment then you just give it away and the pro version?

Full source for $25??? SO that is what you think it is worth? I cannot believe the people who paid massive money for it are not going nuts right now.

Must be something I am not understanding about studio.

Regardless of my whining I bought it also so thanks

It is not full source for $25 and Brenton's purchase is most assuredly a bug. The promotion is to upgrade your current individual licenses to Studio licenses so that they can be reassigned as seats to different people in your studio.

Thought it was a bug; seemed stupid to sell it at $25. Oh well like I said what's $25, so not much lost on my bug buy and I don't even need a 3d engine. At least I did upgrade my TGB licence, and that was a nice deal.

Also noticed that it only says Torque 2D when you press on my name. Still odd that it let me buy it.

EDIT: Hmm I have access to the T3D private forums.

So for more seats, a studio buys multiple copies of T3D Studio(Pro or Binary)? Or will there be a seat purchase option at some time?

what? then why can I download the full source??

That was the only reason I bought it, if this is a bug then I need a refund.

and non owners who buys this @25 package have access to the forums, private ones.

If this is a bug I feel sorry for the people who have to clean it up. I can only imagine people bought it and won't own up; at least I'm honest and did it to test a theory. Although you can track who bought it without owning an individual first right?

EDIT: ouch 2:30 am. Hopefully will find out what happened tomorrow.

well i have already deleted the source I downloaded because they are now stating we do not get source for $25 bucks. I bought it because someone I know who owns none of the Torque products bought it and can now access source and the forums. All for $25!

I have no interest in having my Studios name displayed on the forums. I am currently using Unity because they have web deployment so my T3D just sits on my PC. Not saying it is not great, just have no need for it at this point so I really have no need for this extra studio stuff(hence refund), but no rush. I know you guys are busy.

I would gladly pay the $100 over again for binary, great buy! But not for $25 for a label. :)

@All - Yes, we are aware of the purchasing bug and are trying to rectify it. We apologize for any confusion this is causing, and any account alterations we have to make.

Please, we do ask that you do not exploit this bug. We will be able to track the purchases, whether people own up or not, it just creates a bit more work for us. Stay tuned while we clean up.

Heh if something looks too good to be true it probably is :) It does look confusing $25.00 for all that power :) My wallet senses told me not to buy anything until I see someone explain it again glad I listened.

Alright, let me go into some more detail here. It was late when I wrote my blog.

The $25 price is an upgrade price to your existing license -it's an upgrade. So if you bought Torque 3D for $1000.00 you purchase the $25 dollars to convert the non-studio license to studio. With the studio license you can then assign that license to anyone else as a floating seat.

With the prior license and EULA, you couldn't re-assign the license. If you were a studio, you would have buy an extra $1000.00 license for that person and when the contract ended, it would still be in their name.

Most of our users didn't really understand this and people were unknowingly breaking the EULA. The people that were adhering to the license paid the extra grand. We don't want to punish people who following the rules so building this admin interface was the solution.

ah too good to be true. I did buy the studio because it said I could upgrade to torque 3d for only $25... Oh well

Ha ha ha wicked... well worth $25 to get a studio upgrade, not that I need but the name looks cool.

sure there's some saying about a fool and his money

Cleaned up on my side, and notice sent.

My apology. I had the "studio" part backwards. Figured that it meant a source license holder could assign a seat to us, as worker for hire.

My only concern is now that I have upgraded to a Studio licence, buying other engine licences is more expensive. Maybe I should have purchased the licence for iTorque before I upgraded.. good sales ploy :) Have upgrade discounts also gone on Studios licences? Torque 2D (TGB) - purchasing iTorque 2D would normally give a discount as an individual, but not Studio? I guess my need to assign the licence further down the line to a staff member may be greater at the moment, but when it comes to hiring more staff/contractors, it could become more expensive after 2-3 licence purchases.

Edit: Seems to be working now on the ole upgrade.. ignore my sales ploy bit.. was only playing around :) Paying $475 as an individual or $625 as a studio, seems worth the difference for a roaming licence.

So.. What is the deal with the live chat? I would use the chat to ask this, but there must be others wondering about it.

What kind of questions are you looking to answer using this medium? I am sure this is not for support on making our games, but maybe for figuring out bugs we find? or general questions about Torque itself?

The chat is specifically for the site update. It is not for engine products. Use the usual support forms or forums.

@Julian - No sales ploy. Seems like that price increase may be related to the table that didn't move over that's causing the automatic discount issue. Everyone, thanks for your patience and notes. We tested with QA and associates but it's never the same as the real deal.

Is the promotion over already or did it go back to $1200 because of fixing the bug? Was just about to purchase it until I noticed it now says $1200 instead of $25 for me to upgrade my indie license.

I'm still a little confused, and probably more than a little stupid so bear with me while i ask idiot type questions.

I upgraded to studio and it removed my T3D Pro Owner status and my ability to download.

I also purchased an additional seat, and will probably buy another few (sonner rather than later of the price is to be raised again :p)

In my studio tab it shows that i have two licences; one pro and one binary, and i had to add myself as a user and assign the pro licence to me, and the binary licence to the 2nd user. My First question is; Is this normal that i have to add myself and assign myself the pro licenese if so then perhaps a note on the my studio page might not be a bad idea.

My second question, are all additional seats binary licences, or is there an option for source seats? I'm not actually interested in a source seat for the forseable future, however i'm just curious really.

Please dont send me to read the EULA i dont understand the 'everything is your fault and you cant do anything without our permission' language used in pretty much every EULA on the planet, i like evreyone else scans through it and agreed to it just do we can download it faster to play with the new shiney things.

Again, i'm sorry if this is all rudamentary stuff, but my grasp of certain things is quite horrible at times.

what happened to the upgrade options from TGEA?
