- Summary:
- Benjamin J. Schneider co-founded and operated BEST Software Design in 1999 until 2005. PolyPhontics, the most notable product created by the company, was featured in Electronic Musician magazine and has been used by such companies as Leap Frog and Creativity, in order to create the music and sounds in their interactive children\'s toys. Schneider began working with the Game Research and Immersive Design Lab in early 2005. The GRID Lab is an initiative of the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University. Its features include a non-traditional gaming arcade for the Athens, Ohio community, a facility for game related research for academics, as well as taking on research and development projects in order explore better ways to utilize game and related technologies in education. Schneider played an integral role in the design and development of the GRID Lab arcade, including the point-of-sale software, the audio/video routing infrastructure for managing access to the arcade, as well as the design for the look and feel of the lab through the utilization of concert truss and lighting, to provide a high tech atmosphere. Schneider ported educational game developer, Tabula Digita\'s Dimenxian to the Macintosh while working on the GRID Lab. Dimenxian is a first person, 3D, action-adventure learning game, designed to teach algebra and pre-algebra concepts. Working with other members of the research and development team at the GRID Lab, Schneider is currently developing a fire fighter\'s training simulation in cooperation with Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio, as well as funding support from the Ohio Board of Regents. Prior to joining the GRID Lab, Schneider worked as Technology and Facilities Manager and as audio instructor for the School of Telecommunications at Ohio University. Schneider has also composed and produced soundtracks for industrial, educational, commercial and public service productions.
