TGB Success Stories and Show-Off

by Deborah M. Fike · in Torque Game Builder · 08/10/2009 (12:04 pm) · 25 replies

I realized that we had a Success Stories thread for Torque 2D for iPhone and a Show-Off Thread for Torque 3D, but nothing for TGB. Time to change that! If you have completed a TGB project you'd like to share or just did something cool in TGB, let us know. The more information the better...pics, video, link to website, tidbits on how you developed, etc.

Looking forward to seeing finished projects that I can post in the Torque Powered Database.

Our team finished our first game last year called Super Cell. We're set to release our next game later this year. You can see more screen shots or play the game for free at our site www.greenfiresoftware.com

Good work so far! I know there are others out there too but maybe they don't want to come here and brag.

My game Insectoid was released on my birthday, Nov. 4th. Screenshots and description here:

http://www.actionsoft.com/games/insectoid/

and YouTube video (just finished!) here:

I can't calll the game a "success" as it has been selling quite poorly, but I think it's a good game... people just don't seem to be downloading the free demo to even try it. The gaming world is a different place than it was 4 years ago when I released my first game, so I'm not sure I understand it anymore. it seems like you have to create a game that really stands out somehow and gets attention, to get on all the bogs, in order to make it nowadays. Just doing a "better than most of the other games in this genre" doesn't seem to cut it anymore.

Do an iPhone version, Vern. Then an XBLIG version.

It looks pretty awesome. I think if you do a bit of targeted marketing you could move a few copies. If you just released it this Nov.4th I'd say it's a bit early to be giving up! ;) Happy birthday btw, mine was the 1st :D

Hi.

This is a game called Moonlander that I programmed a while ago (together with a friend who did the sprites). Please download it (for free of course) and try it out :) www.sobkowiak.se/moonlander%20v.0.1.6.zip

Hi! It's been awhile since I've been able to visit the GG forums. Been pretty busy. But I recently got back to a T2D game I started back in 2005, which I managed to finish in time for IGF 2010, and I thought I'd come in and show it. This is actually written in T2D v1.0.2, since I didn't think I'd have enough time to do a port to the current TGB engine.

The game is called Xenopede, and it's a retro arcade maze game. It shares some similarity to Pac Man, but has very different gameplay.

You can see the teaser on YouTube and there are some other videos showing gameplay footage as well.

My website is www.xenopede.com

Here is the embedded teaser video, but it's best viewed at full size HD on YouTube:

This has been an entirely solo effort, so I don't have a lot of resources to promote the game. I wrote it primarily for my portfolio, but now that it's nearing completion, I would very much like to get it out there for people to play. A lot depends on whether I see any interest in the game.

Joe, for that targeted marketing, what would you recommend? I've tried all the free marketing I can think of (submitting the game to download sites, sending out press releases, and contacting as many game blog sites as I could find for indy and space shooter games.) Even a few reviews have come out now, but it hasn't helped.

Also, sorry to clog up this thread with this message. I couldn't find a way to message just you, Joe.

John, that looks awesome! Video me of "Serpentine" an old game for Apple II. Is it based on that? I went to your website, but found no download link, so I'm guessing this is not released yet? When you release, let us know!

Vern, that's right, it's not yet released. I'm just getting a feel for the best way to go about releasing it. I expect to get a playable demo ready within the next month or two, something that allows you to play the first planet, Frostbite, for each of the four mission types. I've added a mailing list on my site so I can make an announcement to anyone interested when I have news.

I'd say the game isn't really "based" on anything, though it's certainly inspired by games like Serpentine, Centipede, and of course Pac Man (with a bit of Crystal Castles thrown into the mix). I know it's hard to tell from the teaser what's going on in much of the action, but the player is controlling the yellow hovercraft vehicle (meant to be a tribute to the round Pac Man), and not the Xenopedes themselves like in Serpentine. The gameplay demo videos I posted on YouTube should give a better insight into gameplay for the four mission types, but I really just need to get a playable demo up there.

BTW, I liked your game, and was very interested in hearing about your experience, since I'd say there's a good deal of similarity between our two games. I expect my experience may be very similar to yours. I'm not sure there's much of an audience for games like this today, no matter the quality. There used to be. Now there's so much noise. In IGF, I'm one of 300 entries. If I'd finished this when I started it in 2005, I'm sure I'd have a much easier time finding an audience.

Thanks for the feedback!

Ban This Game is a small game about censorship in Australia. I made it in a couple of days using TGB. It's a pretty simple game but I'm hoping it will draw attention to this issue among people who didn't already know about it and perhaps spark some interesting discussions.

Trailer on YouTube

Great topic Conor! I've been following the articles regarding Australian censorship at GamePolitics for a while now. The stonewalling of an R18+ rating by Attorney General Michael Atkinson is frustrating, even to read.

Last Stand is a short game I put together for the March Experimental Gameplay Project. I thought it turned out pretty well for a few days effort.

I just finished my first TGB game, Road Gangs, and I'm in the process of marketing it. Road Gangs is a vehicle based RPG set in a post-apocalyptic setting. You can visit www.roadgangs.com for more info, screen shots and of course a demo!
