Torque Game Engine and Torque 3D -> What is the Difference?

by Sanyaade Adekoya · in Torque Game Engine · 05/23/2009 (11:36 am) · 11 replies

Can somebody please throw more lights on this. I need to know the difference if there is any. I already have Torque Game Engine which I believe is a 3D engine and I also subscribed to Torque Game Builder Pro which I also believe is 2D Engine.

When I logged into my account today and I clicked on the torque game engine, the link open up and I saw an advert prompting me to upgrade for $50 as an indie. The link seems like a flash (shockwave) file with a dead link and nothing happen (I mean no upgrading window appeared).

Is there a difference from the one I already subscribed to --> Torque Game Engine and that of --> Torque 3D? Somebody please explain.

God blesses!!!

Best regards,
Sanyaade

The biggest diffrence between the two I'd say is the graphics.
But other than the graphics their is things like the new terrain.
Interiors (structures/buildings) uses dts model format and collada model format(which it converts to dts ingame) instead of the (old) dif model format now.
The river editor, so you can make rivers, which you couldn't do with TGE.
The road editor, makes making roads a trival matter.
Also the "Web Publishing", which means you can play your games in a webbrowser nativly, wowza! (you can do this with resources for TGE, but I don't know if it will at full speed compared to on your desktop)

The scripting is essentialy the same in both of them as far as I know.

Also other than graphics, T3D has the ability to (easily?) intergrate PhysX and other physic libaries(but based on the videos and what they said, I would of thought it already has PhysX intergrated(not fully), or maybe their own Physics builtin), but you can do this also from resources for TGE too.

Nice,

I've got a TGE (not advanced) license atm.

What cost would upgrading to Torque 3D involve?

thx

I think it's necessary to upgrade to TGEA first, then to T3D. Since the TGEA upgrade is discounted by the price of TGE, you've lost no more than if you bought TGEA to start with.
I'm pretty sure.

Sanyaade, Your welcome, Glad I could help.

Daniel, Yeah, good point, as it was just about the engine itself, I forgot to mention about TGEA upgrade. It is seriously necessary on a matter of money.

Pieter, the following costs:
TGE -> TGEA -> T3D
$150 TGE (already paid for)
$150 TGEA upgrade
$505 T3D upgrade
$150 TGEA + $505 T3D upgrade = $655 (upgrade cost)
$150 TGE + $150 TGEA + $505 T3D upgrade = $805 (overall cost)

TGE -> T3D
$150 TGE (already paid for)
$800 T3D fresh buy (you can't upgrade from TGE)
$150 TGE + $800 T3D = $950 (overall cost)

T3D
$800 T3D = $800 (overall cost) and you only get one engine! lol

There should information about this on the buying page for T3D.

Gah, still need to get around to getting TGEA and T3D myself befor the month ends!

Edit: Added overall cost to TGE -> TGEA -> T3D, thanks tylor for pointing that out.

Sorry Joseph, but you including the cost of TGE in TGE -> T3D, but not the TGE -> TGEA -> T3D.

TGE -> T3D would cost $800...

Still more, but not the $950...

I suggest you go from TGE to TGEA to T3D, more for less!

Edit: removed that jibberish I put in this

What I ment with TGE -> T3D was the overall cost, which I didn't make clear, so overall it does cost $950, I just forgot to put the TGE -> TGEA -> T3D overall cost. >_<

Hello Everybody,

Does someone know which link or click will enable me to upgrade my TGE to TGEA. I have tried the link from the upgrade page for several days with several browsers with no success.

I will also appreciate the garagegames staff help or directions on this!

God blesses!!!

In your first post it mention that the site offers you a $50 upgrade, which to me suggests that you have TGE 1.4, I think there is a $50 upgrade to TGE 1.5 that you need to buy before you can upgrade to TGEA.

Im not sure of that though, email Garage Games and get an answer from them.

Hello Matt,

I have TGE 1.5.X (1.5.2)but if I clicked on it from my account it will take me to a page with upgrade where the $150 is crossed out and $50 is shown on a button link. The problem I am having is that the link just loop back with an empty window.

I have try to get an enquiry window from the site but could not find one. May be I have to do this via my email box.

Thanks and God blesses!!!

Best regards,
Saanyaade

One thing that doesn't get talked much about in T3D is the live asset updating. Being able to edit objects or textures in a third party application while having T3D open, and then seeing the changes happen live in the editor without having to reload saves a ton of time and improves productivity.

For example if your designing a terrain, chances are the first time you create textures, you go in-game and load in the textures, and the contrast between the two is far too large. It looks artificial. Previously in TGE or TGEA you'd have to exit. Go into photoshop and tweak things, reload everything. See that it isn't right, exit out and reload photoshop again, etc until it was just right. Now you can modify it in photoshop and see it happen without reloading and it makes it much easier to tweak.
