Sickhead Torsion Comment

Torsion requires the download of their product to be uninstalled and installed every month. This gets old and tedious. So is there going to be an actual version for purchase or a beta so we can get updates I would rather pay money than install and uninstall every month.

I love Torsion, and I'd pay even if the same update process was used. Considering it takes literally less than 10 seconds to update using the uninstall/reinstall message, I don't find it to be a big deal.

Michael, you have to admit though, its a pain if you are not connected to the net

Yes, it is a pain. As I have said before, I would pay for the current version, just to get rid of that updating problem.

It annoyed me so much, that it turned me off of Torsion. As a MicroISV I get it, but as a customer it's down right rude.

One problem I could see with paying now to get rid of the constant update need is that we may no longer bother to update. If the current version works fine for us, it may be months before we upgrade. Yet during that time, new features and changes may have been made that are buggy and require feedback from the alpha users.

The more pre-paid users there are, the less chance of the bugs been noticed until people finally get around to upgrading.

Of course the flip side is that if a major bug is introduced we can't downgrade to the previous version which did work fine for us up until it expired. But then it probably won't take long for a new update to come out and in the mean time we can make do with the editors we used prior to Torsion.

That said, I too would pre pay to get an version that doesn't expire. But I can see a good reason why to not offer this for now.

I'm not sure if I'm playing devil's advocate, or being annoying. I sincerely hope that is not the case. To tell you the truth, when it comes to updating software I have, I'm very lazy and neglectful. I guess it's just me, but I like the fact that Torsion forces me to update, because I live in the tool. I spend 8-9 hours a day at work using Torsion, and then when I get home to work on my own project....you got it, I'm right back in Torsion =). I can definitely see how it's an irritation to some. The update process just works for me due to my laziness. Terrible, I know.

I can just download it and install it, I dont need to remove it and then install it again, that would annoy the ehck out of me. But as I said, I can just install it

The "updates" will be coming to an end very soon. ;)

Hey Tom, I've been meaning to say this but haven't found a good place.
Your adwords campaign is fantastic. Everytime I get an email from our about TGE I get your ad. Of course I never click it and I've asked everyone at the mydreamrpg.com community who has our gmail, email service not to click it as well, so that you save money (we burned through $200 on an adwords campaign once so I know the pain). But umm anyways fantastic campaign!

BTW I'ld love to buy today as well, but I do see the need for occasional updates as well.

Regards,
Dreamer

@Dreamer - Yea if we we're really smart we would be selling the product all that time. ;)

Really the adwords campaign was just me testing out how adwords works... we spend really little per month on it. Still i feel it's a little creepy that Torsion ads come up based on your email content, but i'll happily take the exposure.

I highly encourage people to take advantage of adwords. Especially now that they are served to YouTube viewers based on the video tags.

But really the best place to advertise Torsion is here on GG. ;)

If it works for you, then you'd better not upgrade. You should not interrupt a working process, unless there is some tangible benefit to be had.

Let me step up and clarify my two reasons for the forced upgrades during development. First... we plan on selling this software, so we want the free versions to expire. Second... we want people using the latest version and reporting bugs against that latest version. It has definitely been a longer development process than we expected, but we still feel the date locking was necessary.

Moving forward the final 1.0 release will not force upgrades, but it will remind you of new updates. Also we won't try to maintain downloads of old versions... if the latest doesn't work for you then it's something we need to address. We plan a lot of updates to Torsion moving towards 2.0.

What? You *have to* upgrade or else Torsion will stop functioning because of the timer the beta has.

Yes, the current free test versions of Torsion are time-bombed and stop working on a certain date (well documnted on the download page, btw).

You all need to remember that, like Tom said, this is in beta mode. I'm willing to put money on the fact that 95+% of you don't submit any bug reports or feedback of any sort to Sickhead about Torsion. You want all the benefits that Torsion gives, yet don't want to take the few seconds it takes to reinstall the newer version, then I'd suggest waiting for the release and keeping your complaints to yourself.

Actually, what all the complaining is saying is "Please let us give you money! Why won't you take our money?" I hardly call that complaining.

Patience.. virtue or vendetta?

Some of us have issues with reinstalling new versions, as mentioned above. I for one get my file associations screwed up in Windows XP Home (but not Pro) and I have to go trough a ton of work to get it working again. There are also settings inside Torsion that has to be set up again if you customized them yourself.

Honestly, no one appreciates someone coming into a thread with no understanding, generalizing (I bet I file more bug reports than you do! HA!) and telling everyone what and what not to do. You obviously have no issues with how the process works so just skip provocing and go on with your stuff, and let those who have problems voice their concerns.
