Hello everyone!

Rick Overman put the GPGT forum online today.

From now on, if you have any questions, errata, complaints, etc about "The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque", please post them here.

Until recently, information was posted about GPGT in all of the following places:

Thread --> New books from Garage Games

News Item --> The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque

Hall Of Worlds For Gamers GPGT Product Pages

Hall Of Worlds For Gamers GPGT Support Page

Thread --> Frustrated With New Book

This last thread was started by Roto. In it were some very good questions and well raised issues. I have attempted to answer all of the questions raised there as well as in all of the other threads by keeping an up to date errata document on my site. You can download the PDF from this page.

As of today, 10 MAY 2006, I believe that I have answered any and all issues and errors as listed in the (above) threads.

#1. The title of the thread is: GPGT Forum Is Open, so your post is off topic.

#2. People answered your problem in the other forum you posted in www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=62109

#3. Being rude is not going to get you help.

Hello all,

I am on Lesson #17. First, I do know that this lesson wants you to actually copy the levelloader.cs, not the teleporters.cs that it says in the book. I'm good in that regard.

The problem I am having is that when I enter Torque and buildLevel(0); from the console, nothing happens. The console log spits out a ton of errors regarding the levelloader.cs file and its use of the addEntry and getEntry commands, saying that they are unknown commands.

Has something changed with TGE 1.5 that now invalidates these commands (the book was written for 1.4- I believe)? Or possible I missed a step somewhere. Anything anyone could think of would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

Steve

Hi:

So i put the "\Game Programmer's Guide to Torque Source\MazeRunnerAdvanced\mazerunner" folder in C:\Torque\TGE_1_5_2\example\. Then I modify the game to run in main.cs to mazerunner. I ran the game, opened the game editor. everything works except all the names of the folders, object in the inspector tree appears blank. it also happens in ui editor.

Any knows how to fix this?

Ok, so I am chimming in 3 years later, but I just purchased this book to learn TGE scripting. I have to say that I'm on page 32 and am absolutely loving this book. This book is very clear for me and presents a lot of information that I need to know.

With that in mind, I also downloaded the upgraded disk for TGE 1.5.2.

I have a question, as I stopped reading to muck around with what was on the disk, on of the appendices mentions a master server in perl that is zipped.

The copy of the disk I downloaded, does not contain this. Is there someplace I can get it or was it removed from this version.

Thanks,

It is on mine, though I haven't looked at it. It is not in the folder appendices, it is, appropriately enough in the folder called "master server". I don't think they should have taken it out. If you cant find it, try Ed's new website, Roaminggamer.com

Hi guys. That's my bad. I may have removed that directory by accident.

I uploaded it to my support page under extra content.

Alternately you can download it directly here.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, but I saw that Edward had responded recently...

Would it be possible to add a download link for the Accompanying Disk from the support page in a slightly more Mac-friendly format? The current download is a Windows Executable (EXE) file. I don't have a Windows machine handy, and would love to get the current disk, since I just recently got the book.

Thanks!

ps I tried to e-mail this request via the e-mail address listed on Roaming Gamer, but it bounced back as "Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table"

Is this forum dead? Is GPGT still relevant?

The TGE has not been possible to license for years. Torque 3D has gone MIT and most users are now on the torque3D.org site instead. GPGT is only relevant in that sense that you can use the scripts idea for inspiration to do TorqueScripting in Torque 3D MIT.

GG left the game engine business and released their final engine T3D under the MIT open source license:

First they released the engine under MIT and left the engine business:
https://www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/21875

They then provided contract services:
https://www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/22218

They then went into the education industry:
https://www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/22605

What they do now I don't now(perhaps still education), but they hardly respond to any posts or blogs on this site anymore. Mostly former GG employed people reply if any at all...

Conclusion is that this forum is sadly pretty much close to dead...

Good book though in my opinion :)

HAI EVERYBODY! =)

Close to it. The majority of the posts are content providers posting or bumping their own threads, "2D/3D/MMO/Concept/Film Artist available for contracting" kind of stuff.

Most discussion for the active engine (T3D MIT) happens in Torque3D Dot Org.

The remaining engine discussions that happens on this site are related to legacy engines (TGE/TGEA/TGB) and some Torque 2D MIT questions. Ah...Torque 2D MIT, my favorite engine that has slipped into a coma.
