Object scripts

I read the book and I think I understand data blocks and namespaces and what not I wasn't sure where to put this post I was wondering if someone could explain to me the various different scripts that need to be written to make a basic item (a pickaxe that can be picked up and equipped instead of a gun, or maybe a melee weapon) and where I would need to put these different scripts. I hope that makes sense.
