Absolutely awesome IMO. Can't wait to play with this. Hard to believe but I think they've just gone and reinvented console controllers again!

I just can't help but think the player will be limited for certain types of games with the button configuration. Like I said, I'm gonna try not to pass too much judgment right now. I find myself slowly starting to warm up to some of the possabilities but you have multiplatform games and 3rd person games that will control strangley with this set up. Playing a 3rd person game with a mouse is horrible to me. I don't see this as any different. I can't imagine driving a car with no hands, so playing a racing game by waving my hand won't feel very natural. This set up definatley isn't the answer for all games. I hope they have an option for a regular style controller as well. Maybe something you can slide the remote into that has extra buttons and two analogue sticks.

Terrible idea, IMO. I think Nintendo's finally gone off the deep end. If I can use a regular controller instead, I'd be happy buying the console and throwing this pseudo-innovative controller in the trash. I like to relax when I'm playing a video game. I have no energy left after working and going to school. I sure as hell don't feel like waving my arms around like a madman for hours on end. Might be neat for FPS games for the jobless... But a launch controller? Ugh.

As a gamer: That has got to be the dumbest "controller" I have ever seen! Waving a TV remote around like a fairy princess's magic wand. I feel moronic even just writing that.

As a developer: Agreed! How on earth am I supposed to develop something intuitive on that?!?

Oh man. Instead of just repeating myself I'll just quote Matt Benfall as he said it best;
Quote:Wow, in a community of independant game devs where our biggest strength is innovation, there sure are a lot of people here who don't seem to like it too much

I'll wait to comment on how well or not it will work in specific type of games until I've tried it, but I'll say as much as in my view it should work quite well in more or less any type of game; BUT it will definitely be a little tricker for the developers to make sure it feels right.

In either case, I think Nintendo have simply realized the facts; They're not going to be able to compete with the xbox and playstation, so rather than fighting a loosing battle they instead go off and do their own thing. IF this takes off and they get a few great games going with this thing it has the potential to become a great success. I applaud them for taking this risk.

Just because something is innovative doesn't make it good. Virtual Boy anyone?

Scott hits the nail on the head. Killing oneself by jumping head first into an industrial wood chipper is innovative... but that doesn't necessarily make it a good thing.

Makes me think of a light gun with a motion sensor in it. Maybe great for FPS and lightgun type games, cant imagine it being very good for something like prince of persia. The idea of expanding the controler seems like an unfair way to get more money off people.

As a fan of quirky games, I'm intrigued. It's different, VERY different, maybe even TOO different, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

@Jacob... As far as monopoly resulting in a CHEAPER console.... Are you nuts? Consoles are already sold at a loss, or just barely break even. If there was just ONE manufacturer, the price would go up considerably.

@Joshua: Actually, no, the price shouldn't go up. The problem with consoles is that they always lose money on the hardware, it's just a question of how much. The end goal is to sell enough consoles that you make back the money you lost on them though game revenue. So, if you already know you're getting 100% market share and that you'll be getting a cut from all the games sold, isntead of just 20%, you can afford to lose a lot of money on the console because you are going to make a killing on the games. Granted, they could charge lots more because it is the only one, but then someone would pump out an equivalent system at a cheaper price and the console wars would start all over again. I would hope that whatever company did come to the forefront would realize that they must keep the console reasonably priced in order to keep selling them. And since you don't have to buy a new console that often, it shouldn't be too bad anyway.

Wonder if there will be a cockpit controller expansion for pilot wangs? ;)

Well I'll buy one if I have to sell the computer I'm typing on! Actually attacking the enemies in a zelda game, wow! I mean, think about it! You could do your own sword combos! Imagin the next Soul Calibur were you can actually sword fight. I bet my dad would buy it (he has always moved the controler to jump). As for moving in a third person game, just use the B trigger to go forward and the A button to move back and the remote to do everything else (turn, attack, etc.) As for racing games they mentioned the controler could be put into shells. Stick it in the middle of a steering wheel and drive happy. I think over time man will learn that this is the way games were meant to be controled. :]

@Jacob: Have you not taken economics? Monopolies are bad. The consumer always looses unless the government regulates the monopoly and I don't think we want that. As for keeping the consoles reasonably priced, the Xbox360 is already out of my price range. If they were the only console and still sold the Xbox at the same "reasonable" price then I couldn't afford to play games anymore. :(

The revolution is going to be awsome! Anyone who says otherwise will have to deal with my flying monkeys.

Imagine trying to alternate left and right punches in something like tekken (while moving and blocking). Or infinitely rotating your arms in something like colony wars.
I'm still not convinced, and i really dont see any need for fancy new controllers unless they are genre specific (ie, like steering wheels for racing games etc). Maybe if i get a chance to play one I'll change my mind but i wont be buying one just to find out if its any use.

ps and how about when your mother, gf, brother, dog, etc stands between you and the tv and blocks your signal ;)

I'd back the new controller 100% if Nintendo could get innovative games that really take advantage of it, but I'm not holding my breath

I'm all for innovation and all, but this looks like a very uncomfortable device - it looks like a TV remote.

Speaking as someone who HAS Carpal Tunnel (which IS caused by repetitive wrist movement) this controller immediately turns me off.

Having to stretch my thumb all the way to the bottom if a large remote control isn't exactly conducive to rapid reaction time in games like FPS's or other reflex intensive games.

I could be wrong - Lord knows it's happened hundreds, if not thousands of times before, but this just doesn't do it for me.
