Request - email verification for new accounts

I think this would seriously curtail the number of spammers - and at least give me an inbox to flood when one gets in....

Some random conspiracy theory: Maybe gg sends the spammers themselves to improve pagerank and place important keywords for search engines.

I might buy that if they were placing keywords related to game development.....

No, they place unrelated keywords to attract other people to game development.

I'm essentially on parental leave right now, so I can't check the site regularly. As such, spammers have seen an opening and have ramped up posting BIG TIME. I'll do the best I can and also contact others at GG to pick up the slack while I'm out. Best we can do right now is to continue to nuke spammers as they pop up.

Fortunately the flood we got overnight provided some useful information that we can use to take steps against them.

If I may be so bold as to interject here ,
perhaps new posts should be treated as potential spam . Once the member has
posted 1 or more legit posts he or she would be cleared from the SPAM box or Garcinia box ..herm "Black Majic Specialist" ?? I dont think so ..

We do use email validation for new users, but what's happening is the spammers are actually using real email account and validating them.
The spammers are getting paid to make posts on forums that are quickly indexed by Google (like ours) and are using the search results to get paid for their spam.
I've made some changes to the way new posts are indexed by Google so that it will prevent the spammers from getting paid for their work, which should hopefully slow down, or stop this kind of spam altogether.
I don't want to automatically treat all posts by new users as spam because we commonly see new users sign up when they are trying to get help from our awesome community (psst, that's you guys!).
Now that I have a little more time to concentrate on this issue, I'll be working on tools to help reduce the spam.
Thanks for all your feedback!

Would be easy to kill the spam now by implementing what phpBB and others already have as I explained on a previous thread about the spam problem. It isn't difficult to do provided that you can assign/read bit flags to individual posters' account via most SQL databases.

The biggest thing our community has always had going for it from the beginning is a welcoming environment for new users to immediately get answers to their questions. We don't want to sacrifice that because of spam.

As Zach mentioned, we don't want to automatically treat a new user's post as spam since the primary reason for a user to register an account other than purchasing is to ask a question. Making a user have to wait, potentially, for up to 24 hours for their post to be moderated and published means they are much more likely to skip on participating in the community and possibly move on to a different engine entirely. The biggest thing our community has always had going for it from the beginning is a welcoming environment for new users to immediately get answers to their questions. What our web team is going to work on is a "soft nuke" or "drone strike" button, which will be safer than my nuke. It will still disable an account and hide the posts, but should hopefully also notify me of these strikes. I can then quickly perform a final nuke. There are more details being worked out and the final result may change. As soon as we have something ready, I'll provide the ability to any and all volunteers.

We just had a meeting today to discuss the spam issue and are now taking steps to make it possible for volunteers to aid in the spammer destruction. Essentially, approved volunteers will have access to a new button. As I've mentioned before, moderators/admins have access to a "Nuke" button. This button will disable an account, remove all posts, and wipe the user. It's dangerous and risky to put in the hands of any user outside of GG.What our web team is going to work on is a "soft nuke" or "drone strike" button, which will be safer than my nuke.
