Keeping up... OMG! I feel old now.

Ok, so I NOW have Steam, Uplay, Origin, and a couple of other 'DL standards'...aka BattleNet and more; installed on my computer. (I recently DLed Crysis 3 and Farcry3 from Uplay) GOOD LORD! As a developer, how the heck I am I supposed to 'support' all of these formats? I get it, PC is PC, Xbox is Xbox etc. Still, this is getting a bit crazy. Let's not even include iphone and god knows what else.

Personally, I LEAN toward Steam... Not expecting this to be totally popular but, at least they have had enough time to work out some of the bugs... Anyone recall the 'failed launch' for steam? I do. Anyway, it took me 6 hours to install a game I purchased from another vendor. WTF??? As a developer, I am SERIOUSLY concerned with this. Why? Because, in the end it's not 'Uplay' or 'Origin' or even 'Steam' that is broadcast once the game finally starts, it's your company name and the publisher. So, if I am 'joe gamer' who the heck am I gonna hold responsible if I pay good money and it takes 6 hours and god knows how many log-in attempts to actually play the game? As a consumer, I would blame the freakin production company. Something has got to give.

45 builds of one game ... :S

---------------

Also I've had reports that my game crashes on startup on certain hi-spec system in the Desura build if launched from Program Files --- note that this doesn't happen in my standard build, only the rebuilt version done by Desura themselves so there's like jackshit chance of me tracking that issue down as my handler doesn't even have access to the dev team who built their wrapped never mind me ...

Steve,

Great link! This is exactly what I was referring to. I can NOT imagine what it is like for someone like yourself who is trying to expand his/her market. It seriously has to be a nightmare. I know from a content maker standpoint, that it was TERRIBLE to try to export models and scripts for the multitude of engines out there. Thanks for your valuable input on this. It is indeed nice to know I was not wrong in my initial assessment.
