Making a game complicated?

by Matthew Hawley · in Torque 3D Beginner · 03/28/2014 (6:17 am) · 7 replies

I'm 14 and want to use the FPS tutorial to make a game. I know that making a game will be complicated but...is it to hard or something?

Making games will always be hard, regardless of what engine or language you use. Time, patience, and willingness to make a lot of errors are key qualities when making games.

Welcome Matthew,

Yep, making a game can be hard. You have the right idea though, start with the tutorials, read the documentation and ask questions. Good luck and have fun.

I started when I was 14... and have yet to finish a game. But I've made a lot of cool stuff and learned an incredible amount along the way. So if you want it, go for it!

Pro-tip, make something really simple first - then build on it.

Don't listen to Steve, no one does that ;)

On a serious note, I dunno about "too hard", but it most definitely a challenge.

That said, unless you learn literally nothing, even failing to produce an actual game gives you a lot of experience and knowledge you can put forward to your next project, etc.

So even if it's challenging, and it is, if you have a game you want to make, I would say it's worth the attempt.

Be aware that it may take years to master even one discipline. So pick something simple first. The FPS tutorial is a good choice, leave everything as it is and start by making small changes, like placing custom props in the map or modifying some scripts, this way you will get some progress within days.

Making a game is as challenging as you want it to be. You can either start working right out of the box (one of the nice features of T3D), or by looking through some of the old resources & packs here on GG to find something that might suit your needs.

I haven't ever "completed" a full project, I've released a few "games" however, those are simply little fun ideas that I quickly threw together with my time, and now my work has me building my own game engine from scratch.

You'll find some pretty amazing things that will happen by being a part of this community. It's a very rewarding experience to have, and like myself, I definitely recommend starting young (I think I was like 12 when I started Tribes / Tribes 2 modding).
