Crowd-funding Torque 3D for Linux
by Vincent Ellis · in General Discussion · 09/19/2013 (6:22 pm) · 11 replies
The Torque 3D Indiegogo campaign raised $10,000 to support the development of a Linux port. Although this is not the goal of GarageGames, and might not be enough to pay for GG developers, it's a significant sum that might be enough for community developers to dedicate some of their time to the project.
We already have a great project by Luis Anton Rebollo here, we just need more talent helping him. We all managed to support Torque 3D on Linux and raise $10,000... why not donate this amount to Luis and other community developers?
Let's do this! GarageGames could contribute a lot mentioning this thread on Twitter and the homepage.

Donated :o) I mean why not?

It would be nice if GG could sponsor this movement, so we can raise money for Luis and other developers to further develop T3D on Linux!

It didn't get off the ground, but we raised $10,000. I think that's amazing and would give lot's of time for other developers to dedicate to the project, like Luis is doing. I am starting to wonder if I would be better off adding 3D and networking to T2D... I am already going to have to rework a lot of the 3D side anyway.

Not to sound like the Pessimist but to who is this going to? What assurances do you we (anyone who donates) have that this isn't lining someone else other than the actual developers pockets?
No offense intended-just playing the (no pun intended...) devils advocate in this situation. It's odd to me to say "Look what I did, I'll be working on this more but in the meantime click donate and write me a check"... heh.

I'm a bit baffled that a port was never made. 10k in and no results? That's a bit angering. Vincent I am a huge supporter of Linux and Torque3D. That donate button however leads to a hotmail account however... one that is souga el diablo negro? I'm skeptical to donating to jesus_christo@gmail.com but when you have a name like the black devil I'm just a tad bit more skeptical. Not to sound like the Pessimist but to who is this going to? The problem is it is a lot of work to get Linux up and running due to the lack of opengl support. I think we quoted about 3 to 4 months I believe and I assume others did as well due to what the indiegogo campaign was for. 10,000 only covers a month and a half for us and while others may work a little cheaper, 10,000 cannot cover it for a company to do it. Now if an individual wants to work in their spare time outside of work, then 10,000 might look better to them since its extra money and they are not trying to live off it. Of course this was before the current work that the community has been doing on Linux.

Or, maybe, Luis and other people involved with the Linux port can form a small group, create a an IndieGogo campaign with a lower objective (5K, 8K for example) and we can all crowd-fund it.

I guess we need Luis to step up and say if he's fine with donations being made, if he is actually working on the port and if we crowd-fund his work, he would be able to finish. Lol! :o)
Luis has been a member of this society since April 20, 2004.
Besides that many programmers have weird email names.
I think it should be fine :o)

I know that email does not look very professional lol, it's a very old joke. I do not remember the time that I using that account.
@Vicent
Yes I'm still working on the port. Work on OpenGL and Linux, are closely related.
About the crowdfunding, I think it's too soon. I'm not a person with experience to give credibility to a project like this. But we can wait until the project is more advanced and people can download a demo to try on Linux.
The OpenGL part is already advanced enough to show things, I'll have to get to fix the major problems of Linux. Then we could perform a crowdfunding to end/speed up the project.
Still, there is much work to do to prepare for a campaign like this, and I just I can help with that because my English is very weak. But if anyone is willing we can do some work and then submit it to the Torque3D committee.
Things we can do:

Things we can do:
- Write a press release.
- Write a draft text for the campaign.
- Screenplay for the video.
- Research legal issues and taxes.
- Make a list of places where advertise.
- Brainstorming.

Also count on me contributing something to you, I just want to see further development go into this before I'm willing to open my wallet. Good luck and hopefully Congress passes the budget so I have a wallet... otherwise I'll have to sell my $80 wallet for food =P

Luis, as I stated if you want a torque3d.net e-mail just let me know. You should advertise this on Torque3D.net as well... I'm sure Lukas would love to add this to his Torque3D Magazine for the 2nd edition. Also count on me contributing something to you, I just want to see further development go into this before I'm willing to open my wallet. Sadly, even though several people pledged it just didn't get off the ground.
