Torque3d.net?

by JD · in Torque 3D Professional · 09/17/2013 (9:33 pm) · 34 replies

Why haven't you registered and introduced yourself?

Need people to contribute more to this great community website before it goes belly up!

I challenge each of you to write a simple or complex tutorial on Torque, highlighting a particular aspect (Torque Script basics, or getting CTF into the FPS Tutorial, a how-to on setting up/running a master server, etc)

Dwarf what are my motives? Please enlighten me on my plot to monopolize torque? Otherwise please stop making the accusations. It's offensive to me

@James

Lol, You did not read my last post :o)

Edit: Also I did not think that you would have an economical motive. I was just thinking that perhaps some people might wanted another place to sell addons too. Or at least to promote their stuff. Which is perfectly in order with me. So in fact nothing is really pointed at you in anyway. I mean Lukas post a blog about IPS right? It is fine with me. No harm there(IPS is a interesting product). It just make one think about what different people want with the project.

So no plots, no secret plan here. Just a thought about why Garage Games website is not enough as I find the resources and tutorials here fine. In other words I do not share the idea about MUST have another site. Hence I try to understand why Lukas and others want it.

In that process I try to understand it out from user friendliness, economical incitements(if people are add on developers), and the psychological factor(fear of loosing what we have if GG is no more one day).

So once again, if I offended you or any other I apologize. I did not mean to insinuated that you James(or others) had any bad motives(it is not bad to promote ones product if people wanna use a blog for that, that is just commercial) what so ever.

I think the main point is that GarageGames is busy doing other things and is not in a position to really dedicate time to improving the site (on our side). Basically, nothing in the Wish List is likely to be addressed any time soon, if ever.

I also think the Resources section of that site should really be a wiki along the lines of TDN....

Look i have a dream... i want new people to come to t3d and think oh i want fps, or lasers, or flying... and been able to scroll thru a list of tutorials, follow it and presto! A basic game is born. Of course this is not innovative but it's a way to introduce new comers and on lookers. From there they can follow a torque script guide and expand their knowledge. This idea goes for audio and visuals as well

My two cents: if you want to take the engine forward and keep it relevant in the future as well as bring in new users, I think you need to ditch the name Torque, and GarageGames altogether. The sites a mess, there's like 500 different products half of which aren't even used/supported/updated anymore. I mean even when I was getting started with it I spent the first week using T3D 2.0 because I didn't know any better, and the tutorial links to that package instead of the new 3.0 one.

I'm a new user and I almost skipped over it because I remember Torque from years ago, and it's never had a great stigma surrounding it (lots of game dev communities look down on it)

I whole heartedly agree, the tribes engine it is =~P, seriously i don't see a name change coming. But with the website yes. Look if i split the community sorry, it's necessary to figure out who contributes and who talks about contributing... simply put torque will succeed with torque3d.net or fail with it. The website represents torque, it represents the strength of the community. When people hear torque they will go there before gg, simply because of name association... the content on gg is ancient. Valuable for learning much how we teach history in books, but history is no longer recorded in books, ( now the nsa records it via fb, g+, and twitter lol), it's on the net, it evolved. Torque3d.net is torques evolutionary path

I am not trying to be unfair here(just more realistic), but, ahem. Try to do a Google search on "Torque 3D" and see what you get, I'll help you;
Hits in order
1.Torque 3D | Products | GarageGames.com
2.Documentation - Torque 3D | GarageGames.com
3.Torque (game engine) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
4.Bitgap Games' Sahara Demo for Torque 3D - YouTube
5.GarageGames/Torque3D · GitHub
6.The Top 10 Game Engines – No. 10: Torque 3D | Game ... - Develop

It is called SEO and relevant contents. GG website wins on contents and the word Torque against torque3d.net. If your website wish to have success you will need a good webmaster and lots of lots of relevant contents.

They(new users) will go to Garage Games because that is where the search engine points for now(unless a redirect from Garage Games is arranged... doubtful I would say).

About ancient stuff, my CS classes have thought me that no knowledge is really old or useless. Wanna call it evolution to call a whole database, with Torque resources and posts, ancient history is pure madness :o)

Your last post really scared me...

@All,
People! Come on, James is trying to help promote the engine. Give him some space.

General comment:
Please don't complain if someone wants to monetize the engine or the community. IF WE DON'T BRING MONEY IN THE ENGINE WILL DIE. I don't care if someone uses: banner ads, sells support, sells code, sells art, sells a re-branded engine, or sells games. If we alienate the money producers we will kill off the future. Like it or not but money = better engine. Heck, go look at Blender.org. They sell all sorts of services, and even merchandise.

Meta tags anyone? Dwarf i could easily change the Google results within a few months. I chose not to for the moment. I'm waiting to change it over once i feel the content is to par... what you say while valued and valid is an argument... you see a bunch of links on Google... what is relevant, what is junk? Think about this because a simple meta tag and email to Google can have massive turn overs. GG is always useful, i love gg, but I'm looking towards the future, are you or are you stuck on the past??

@Dwarf are you joking right now or are you actually serious?
Did you just say that we should dump Torque3d.net because it lacks content ? That is sich a moot point i dont even..

This whole thread is about generating more content on torque3d.net!

I dont even, feels like i'm talking to a kid i've had it up to here with this thread, I had higher hopes for this community, i'll quit this thread and rant over the arrogant attitude of the GG community for a couple of days.
I'm out.

@Lukas and @James

No I am NOT saying you will have to dump torque3d.net, I am saying what you need to do to make it more visible on a search engine. You see when I am not making games I work as a webmaster, hence I also work with SEO. Sigh...

One cannot simply drop Google a mail and then fix the results. It does not work like that. Google index their search results after contents and relevance as well as other factors.

I think this is all misunderstood. I took a critical stand and tried to understand why we needed a new site. Tried to understand why an Open Source engine could not be on a commercial site(at least I understood it like that from you). I alsp said that I like the idea.

I have never said it should be dropped or dumped. Not once actually.

I have no idea why Lukas think I feel that the site should be dumped.

Also Lukas, I am not the GG community. We were two people being a little critical here, and that is all.

Edit: No meta tags won't do it alone, sorry James. Drop me a mail if you like help with some SEO or some good links about it... I mean it :o)

Edit edit: I am also out of this thread. Getting too emotional to me :o)

Dwarf and lukas please don't leave lol, i enjoy a debate- especially when I'm right! =~P
I get you dwarf, but you're coming off as a pessimist... take an objective pov. You say you're open but coming off as subjective... i understand how Google works... i understand meta tags and indexxing. Have you ever contacted Google though over results? They can and will override the indexing and display your site.

This is what i ask, post and participate on both sites. Ask questions on both as well...

Yeah, people are getting way too defensive. I think it's good to discuss, even if we disagree. It's obviously not how everyone feels, though.
