Yue,

Looks like they dropped DX9c support for CryEngine 3 (I figured that was coming) min specs below:

Crysis 3 system requirements (minimum)

CPU: 2.8 GHz dual core processor, Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Phenom X2 or better
RAM: 2GB
Graphics: DirectX 10 graphics card with 1 GB RAM, Nvidia 400-series or AMD Radeon 5000-series.
Operating system: Windows Vista
DirectX 9c sound card
16 GB free hard drive space

Why? Is that smart? Really?

Well their games just target the higher end of the market.

If they want to continue to put out engines with competitive graphics they need to have a cut off point. I doubt many with Windows XP are using the graphics cards capable of their recent games anyway.

I always think the CryEngine is visually good but very expensive compared to other engines.

44 procent of all win machines are Windows XP. That is quiet a cut off point :o)

I can run CryEngine3 on a WinXP system, I don't even have a gaming graphics card and it runs really smooth, ok their demo only runs at around 15fps, but in a less crowded scene it is all super fast, while Torque is kind of laggy all the time. This is a whole different level, it feels very efficient compared to what it can show. Their polycount is similar, up to 1 million on an empty terrain and up to 3 million in a full scene, this is what you get in Torque also.
To me CryEngine seems to be the fastest/most efficient, but I did not test it very much, just one of my first impressions.

Quote:44 procent of all win machines are Windows XP
But in what context is that statistic? Are those people's personal PCs at home? Or are they computers driving specialist equipment, like display screens and checkouts? Or school/office PCs that haven't been upgraded? I'd say the Steam hardware survey provides a more relevant statistic, which puts XP at around 7%.

@DB

that is hard to say, but many peoples' old computers who was bought with win XP have not been upgraded as well as many firms machines have not necessarily been upgraded.

That kind of knowledge can be hard to come by and one can always find new ways to point out issues, one little thing I learned taking classes in statistics for economists :o)

Her is a link: Windows 8 now up to 4.27% market share, but not at Windows 7¢ï¿½²s expense

At least that tells us that some "could be our customers" might have a Windows XP installed.

edit:
Oh and the number was 37.xx procent and not 44 :o)

Also the steam hardware survey link shows us a great overview of what we can expect to aim for people going to buy games.

So we can say the target audience, if you released a game today!:
Windows 7
DirectX 10
1GB VRAM
4GB RAM
2 core CPU
Resolution 1920x1080

At some point you must do away with the old (as long as you continually learn from it), it's the only way to advance.
