Why can't Linux get Torque 3D?

by Carlo L. Bensi · in General Discussion · 07/17/2013 (6:38 pm) · 13 replies

It seems to me that the way Microsoft is going a lot of people will move to Linux and thats a real shame for Torque 3D. I see a lot of other game engines making the move to Linux and I can't understand why the community doesn't seem willing to even entertain the idea.

2 of the cheaper alternatives I've seen is Unity and Leadwerks. While you're there check out the asset store... any ideas GarageGames???

Check out leadwerks kickstarter for Linux Here. It's already fully funded and is going for stretch goals, android support anyone???

And don't forget steam, now on linux and getting stronger by the day...

Torque 3D has a lot going for it already, it just need to expand to other platforms.

I've been using Torque on and off since about 2004 and I think Torque 3D could be great IF it has full support for Linux and Android.

Is Linux and/or Android support important for Torque? Am I just delusional? Should I just do this myself (I'm not THAT good... yet)?

Uhm... what? Need I state it yet again?

www.indiegogo.com/projects/port-torque-3d-to-linux

GG has tried to fund a project like that forever. The issue is.... DUDE it's a major overhaul and rewrite of many of the the core systems. However, on the positive side:

www.garagegames.com/community/forums/viewthread/133220

or

www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/22331

It's NOT ignored, in fact it is the number one request on the list for new features: www.garagegames.com/products/torque-3d CLICK ON FEATURE REQUESTS (right hand side of the screen).

This port is NOT ignored, nor abandoned.

It's just slow in coming (oh trust me, it WILL happen). The COMMUNITY will make it happen, rather than some quick 'pay me and I will do it' coder. These things take time. Remember T3D has NOT even been open source for a full year yet!

My advice, contribute! I don't care if you know NOTHING about coding. Submit a freakin icon to the NUMEROUS GitHub branches.... every little bit counts.

"2 of the cheaper alternatives..."

Cheaper? Than free?

T3D is in a great place to go to Linux/MacOS and to be a top engine one day soon now its MIT. From your thread I am guessing you haven't seen what has been happening with T3D since it was released as MIT.

The future of the engine is in our hands not Garage Games'.

Hey Ron,

You've sort of made my point. Without some SERIOUS funding (coders have to eat too) it won't move ahead fast enough to stay competitive and linux support is, as you said, 'a major overhaul and rewrite'. I just don't believe weekend warriors will be enough to do it, i've seen other projects fail for that very reason mostly due to resource management or lack thereof.

I think we DO need a 'pay me and I will do it' coder to get it to the point where the community can handle the updates, bug fixes and whatever else.

For some reason the funding failed (lack of exposure???) and with indiegogo I think maybe they should have gone with the flexible funding option, at least it would have been a good start to pay the coder. Why don't we have another go?

The last point you made I 100% agree with, contribute anything and EVERYTHING you can, someone else WILL find it useful.

At the moment all I can do is throw what little money I have at anybody working on T3D. I wish I could do more but right now I can't (long story so I won't bore you with it)

Oh, and Edward... By cheaper I meant as in comparison to engines like unreal and crytek... And I have been reading almost every single post on GG for the last 3 years dreaming of the time I can get back into 'playing with Torque' so I know exactly where T3D is.

"The Dusan" already made a Linux port and also presented it here for free:
http://www.garagegames.com/community/forums/viewthread/133220/1
but nobody seemed to care, now he is frustrated because he got ignored pretty much and stopped with it.

You do not even mention him here, even though he did some hard work all by himself to make it going.
Maybe you should try to pay him to get him back, instead of making all the work again.

That Dushan is very talented. So awesome. Why did this not get to the front page as breaking news or like it?

Seriously he did a great job, he is awesome, he did it all for free.

No. He has not been ignored. In fact we were just talking about his port(s) at the last committee meeting and wondering why we haven't heard anything lately... He needs to present a blog, to advertise, especially since forum posts are so quickly buried and lost. He also needs to contribute pull requests if there is to be sufficient impetus for us to work from.

But he feels like that.
Now you probably need quite some diplomacy to get him back.

It is a shame if "The Dushan" has done all of that work and has now decided to sit on it. Based on the last post by J0linar in that thread, the latest status is:

Quote:and regarding Dushan`s Linux Port
its running/ Editor is working
like mentioned it is not stable and neither usable in production but its there to grab/ loook thru - work on and expand

As with any community contribution we need a Pull Request into the Torque 3D repo in order to integrate the work. To date that hasn't happened. Once that occurs we'll have no problem writing a blog talking about Linux support in T3D and who did it. I assume fame and recognition would follow. :)

Pretty simple... instead of saying "video or it did not happen"

We change it up.... "pull request or it does not exist". Welcome to open source.

Oh yeah, and 'he feels ignored'.... well OBVIOUSLY he did not make enough noise... I know if I pulled something like that off... there would be video, blogs, freakin redit posts, you freakin name it. A forum post gets lost WAY too fast. Game development is a small community but, you have to make quite a bit noise to stand out. For example....me.... am I quiet about anything I finish? NOPE!

Well Dusan do some gitty di hut(hippy di hop) and pull that request so Linux users and others can help you finish this awesome great thing you are on :o)

@Duion you might need some sugar or a happy meal. Sorry couldn't help it but you sure sound a little disappointed :o)

Just thought I'd note that anyone using Unity will have to use a Windows or Mac machine rather than a Linux development environment. It uses entirely too many pieces that are unsupported by Wine. While I've seen people get the base editor running, things like importing assets haven't worked because of their passthrough process, which when everything is installed on the target machine, is awesome. When it's not, it's painful for the team.

But, if you're just looking to target linux for gamers rather than engaging the Linux development community, it's a strong choice.

see that is the funny thing
as Stock T3D Mit v3
runs pretty good with wine on linux
and editor is working aswell
(have to blame myself, actually planed todo a howto get T3D Stock runnin with wine on Linux, guess i should really do that soon - might get some ppl interested)

now this ofc is not the same as havin a real T3D Linux version
but its a start for the ones that just cant wait for a Linux Version of T3D

and @ ron
