Dead Resource Links?

by Matt Kocubinski · in General Discussion · 09/05/2012 (10:27 am) · 12 replies

E.g. www.garagegames.com/community/resource/view/6504/

Seems like most of these Resource Links are dead. Is there anyway to recover this one? I've tried contacting some people in the comments, no responses.

You can always try A Big Hole by HNGamers
Unfortunately I were unable to find that one on there.

@Matt -- I have the one you want. Disclaimer -- I have C++ files that I downloaded from that resource. I have never looked at them, never tested them, etc -- Disclaimer over.
Post an email address where you would like me to send them.

@Vlad -- no go on that one. I never copied any of the ones that dealt with T2D. Probably it was unwise of me. sorry.

@Steve: why not upload the resource files you've downloaded to the bighole filehost so that we continue collecting Torque related files that have become lost in one place. If you do that then just share a link on the relevant Resource page. There's a few of us who have been doing this for a while now. Unfotunately I don't have either of the two Resources mentioned here in my library or I would.

Well, I am not against uploading it to the big hole, but a few issues come to mind. 1: Didn't EB shut it down for some reason a while ago? The link above to that New Big Hole (haha) appears to me be dead. 2: It isn't that easy to find things in there, I mean unless you know the exact title of the file you are looking for. (this wouldn't stop me from posting it, but I thought it would be easier for Lukas if I just emailed it to him). And lastly 3: I have close to 2,000 resources on a portable hard disc. This includes good ones, great ones, and crap ones. It doesn't include anything that appeared to me to be specific for the 2d engines. Every single resource I copied both the web pages themselves and the associated zip or rar files because I never knew when or if the GG site itself might be gone. Many of the resources I copied therefore don't include separate code files, and therefore, at the moment, they are all still available (I guess) on the resources pages. I don't know how many hundreds of them have zip and rar files that are no longer available. I am not what you would call a sophisticated programmer. I don't know what portion of all these would be useful to everyone. I am almost certain a lot of it is not very useful. My drive reports 3.47gb, 52,472 files and 5,136 folders. I find those totals hard to believe, but that's what it reports. I don't know how (or if anyone wants me) to FTP this en masse. I sure as hell ain't doing it one by one. Oh ya, I also made a spreadsheet so I could sort out what I had by approximate date, author, title and subject matter( subject matter was very difficult and a crude attempt).

Yeah, eb's filehost was always kind of flaky... I didn't realize that he had shut it down. Same about the hngames filehost: I had just used it a few days ago to upload something.

I also hope that I didn't imply to upload everything you've saved over the years en masse. Even I wouldn't do that, I usually upload a 'lost' Resource only if someone requests it.

But I guess with the community filehosts being down the best thing will be to share to the individual making the request and just maybe that person will do the same in turn for someone else.

I do still keep up with the forums, and whenever I am able I try to help out with lost resources. Meanwhile, I have not heard from Matt with an email I can send this one to.

If you wouldn't mind would you send it to me since I don't have that particular one? My email is listed on my profile page.

Done. If I hear nothing further from you, I will assume you received it.

Thanks Steve. I've added it to my pool of archived Resources. This will help ensure that not all of them become lost in time. Hopefully something can be resolved in regards to an alternative community filehost in the coming future since abighole isn't reliable anymore.

I noticed that abighole.hngamers was back up, so uploaded the archive for the Client side TSStatic object Resource.

Yeah, my uploader was simple and the host wouldn't allow .rars from EU sometimes and other times not from Canada..and blah blah blah..

~ It was better than nothing.. ~
I shut down the uploader because of script-kiddies.

If you want to put something in the hole(& have it put the lotion on its' skin!) let me know & I'll give you a private ftp to upload files.

I'll keep it open forever unless this open-source happenin' throttles me blind.

..try sorting by 'description' to make it easier to peruse for archive-resource files
