Externally Funded Projects

by Vincent BILLET · in General Discussion · 04/02/2010 (4:58 am) · 3 replies

I'm currently working on an "Externally Funded Project". My question is simple, and complex in same time.

It refers www.torquepowered.com/products/torque-3d, licensing menu.

I currently own T3D Pro. One of my customers need TGE 1.5.2 under Linux to answers his needs. So, I consider this project as an "Externally Funded Project"... More.. The project must not show the Torque splash screen in startup.

Even if there is a partial answer to my question here : www.torquepowered.com/community/forums/viewthread/87909, I would like to have your (TorquePowered) opinion. I post this question public forum to allow him to see the answer, and hoping it will be usefull for other peoples.

The main issue is "How to get it work?". Do my customer must own a T3D Studio licence? Do I need to own a T3D Studio license? Do we Both need to own this one?

If I own T3D Studio, does-it allow him to update the application (always with no splash screen)
If he own T3D Studio, does this allow me to give him engine updates ?

The project is a "serious game" application. My customer needs to avoid splash screen AND to update engine's source code, but only for this project. In another way, I need a T3D Studio license, for many (so many) intern projects.

So the question is quite simple what is the best way to organize T3D Studio ownership (and developpers licenses) at lower cost and with all capabilities (splash screens)?

@Vincent - Hmmm, this is all kinds of sticky. I'll need to talk to our licensing department directly. We are currently adjusting our EULAs, so I'll check with them on both cases.

Thank you to check this point. The main Idea is : What shall I recommand to a customer, who want a serious game project, to be clean with you? And What shall I own (as indie)?

If you could give us a quick answer, it would be nice.

Hi Vincent-

Quote:Do my customer must own a T3D Studio licence? Do I need to own a T3D Studio license? Do we Both need to own this one?

This is precisely why we created the "Studio License." The owner of IP created with Torque must always own a Torque License. If the owner of the IP is not the developer then the owner, or business, needs to purchase a "Studio License" to Torque. Studio License Developer "Seats" may be assigned by the Studio License owner to the development team members. If the developers change during the course of the project or at it's conclusion, for maintenance, the Studio License Owner can reassign the Studio License Seats to a new developer or set of developers.

I'll address the splash screen question in a moment. As I explained above, for your case, your client would be the owner of the Studio License and you would be the developer. As long as one of the Studio Seats is assigned to you, you can provide updates to your client.

To remove the Splash Screen on a Serious game we have two options:
1. a "Splash Screen Waiver"- Splash Screen Waivers can be purchased by any Torque Licensee who want to remove the Torque Logo from our start up sequence whether for entertainment titles or serious games. For details on Splash Screen Waiver please contact licensing@torquepowered.com
2. a "Modeling Simulation and Training Project License"- for game console titles and for "Serious Games," we offer flat rate per-title licenses. These licenses are more expensive upfront, but allow for any number of developers to work on your project for a single fee. Because these licenses are customized to individual projects we can also build a splash screen waiver into the MS&T license.

In that case you may be in a situation where you need two sets of licenses: one which your client owns and one which you own. Remember from above, the owner of the IP must always own a license. If you have projects you own, you need a license. If you are working on projects for a client, your client needs a license as well.

I've given you a rough outline of the options above, however, we should probably set up a phone call to discuss whether you want to get a set of Studio Licenses, a MS&T Project License or some combination of both. Drop me a line at licensing@torquepowered.com with your phone number and we can set up a call.
