toggle shadow viz?

Under Lighting...."toggle shadow viz".... can anyone tell me what this is for?
All I ever get when i click on it is a small window painted red

Click on a light, and it will display the shadowmap.

I selected a light in T3D 1.1 and clicked toggle ShadowViz and it still is just red with no dimensions?

I tried it in south pacific as well as my own build.

Toggle the light to have "castShadows" on. Not gonna get any shadow information without some shadows.
