Is TGB worth getting now since Torque 2D will be out soon?

Hi, I developed 2D games with a different engine for a couple of years, but now I want to find something better suited for my needs. I'm seeing if Torque is right for me as it seems like the best candidate in my search, but I have a little dilemma.

I'm not sure whether getting Torque Game Builder is worth it considering Torque 2D will release sometime this year. I'm especially interested in Torque 2D because the real-time networking is vital to one of my future planned projects: a 2D platforming fighting game with online play.

If I get TGB now, I probably won't use it in any projects until later so I can become familiar with it and its programming language. It will allow me time to get familiar with Torque, but if Torque 2D makes a lot of changes, then it may be for nothing.

Pricing is also an issue. I read in the development blog that discounts for TGB users are in serious consideration, but will Torque 2D be the same price as TGB?

Spot on, TorqueScript will not be changing. You can still take advantage of learning the work flow and basics of building a game using the engine. This knowledge will carry over to Torque 2D. By the time you are ready to commit a serious design, assets, and budget, Torque 2D will be waiting.

The most drastic changes will occur to the editor interface and the introduction of some new features not available currently in TGB. Backwards compatibility might break, so be prepared to port your script code and behaviors over.

We have not nailed down the pricing for Torque 2D yet, but as you saw we are heavily leaning toward the model we introduced with Torque 3D: discounts for existing owners of the previous tech (TGB).

That is very good to hear Michael! I was hoping there'd be an upgrade discount.

Is there an estimated price range for T2D yet? Will it be under the $350 mark? That comment scares me considering TGB Pro is already $250, and you're saying we'll need to me more serious about our budgets.

Budget = Engine cost, labor, contracting, marketing, etc.
