RPG in early planning stages looking for development team

Hello all, I am currently in the early planning stages for a singleplayer steampunk RPG (with the possibility of team based multiplayer like Baldur's Gate and similar games)I've been designing off and on for the last few years. I'm in need of skilled 3D artists, level designers, and gameplay scripters.

About me

I'm a recent graduate from The University of Abertay Dundee, having completed a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Games Technology. I'm both an artist and a programmer skilled in 3D modeling and texturing as well as numerous programming languages. I've worked with TGA, TGB, TGEA, and am currently working with T3D so I should be more then capable of pulling my own weight on this project and am simply looking for people to join up so it doesn't take the next 10 years to complete.

About the game

Eternus Apparatus(Working Title) takes place in a world of magic and machines. The world is a paradise where war has been forgotten and the average man's sole ambition is the pursuit of knowledge. Unfortunately this peace is not to last as a terrible evil lurks in forgotten ruins, waiting to be released by the unwitting descendants of those who locked it away.

The main story takes place starting with the player character exploring the ruins, and proceeds to the end where the player must face that which they unleashed upon the world and either destroy it or make use of it to take over the world for themselves. As the main story progresses many side quests will become available. Each quest will have at least one choice with the result aligned to either good or evil which will affect how other quests become available and how other characters interact with the player. As the players overall alignment changes, different interactions will become available in conversation and in the game world itself which reflect that alignment.

Features

  1. Next-Gen graphics using Torque 3D
  2. Custom character design
  3. Custom weapons
  4. Unique spellcasting system
  5. Destructible environment
  6. Destructible bodies (ie. Dismemberment)
  7. Random generated levels dungeon levels(Gameplay is never the same twice)
  8. Much more...

As the game is still in planning stage there is likely much which will be changed or added, so if you join me I am more then willing to listen to your ideas. At the start it is unlikely to be a paid position, however it may be possible down the road (consider it a nonpayed position otherwise), and upon completion payment is certain. A game design document is in the works and at present should contain more then enough information to answer any questions, however I will not be posting it here and will only provide it for people who are serious about joining up.

Bryan, you might want to post some additional information, such as whether this is an online RPG, or single-player, and the type of compensation that people can expect (no one should have to get to milestones in order to discuss payments).

Also, you might want to take a look at this thread, even if you're not doing an online RPG, the spirit of the thread is pretty much the same, and can save you some time...

Thanks for the tips. As for payment, at the moment I just can't pay, but as the necessary work will certainly take a great deal of time there is a great possibility that I will be able to afford to pay full or part-time wages in the future, otherwise payment will just have to wait until the game is finished and hopefully being sold. So basically if your wanting to work on this for the money, you should probably find something else, but if you like the idea and want to further it and make money when it's done then I can use the help. Otherwise as I said above it will probably take me a great deal of time to complete on my own as at the moment I am still just testing ideas out with T3D and learning the necessary formats for if and when I need to do the work by myself.

Despite what is written in that post you linked me to, it is unlikely I will have many of the gameplay features unique to this game done anytime soon(otherwise I wouldn't need a team) as some of them could easily prove to be infeasible in any decent time frame. If of course anyone chooses to take that post to heart and not even look at my project because I've not yet written much gameplay, then I'll only have to worry about finding artists and musicians once I've done all the gameplay and level design.

Well, the post was written to help people attract teams. It's not a "rule book", and plenty of teams have done things pretty much opposite from that and succeeded, while others have done exactly that and failed. I put it out there as a matter of things I have noticed over the years with successful teams and teams that have been successful in attracting people.

I'm not making any judgments about your project, simply trying to help, which was the goal of that thread (and if you scroll down, you'll also find dozens of links to rpg and mmo related threads and resources) :)

Yes, it was a very informative post. I'm not really expecting any interested persons to reply until I have some gameplay demos anyways, but much of that will require a complete reworking of how Torque handles weapons, and then of course a complete spell effect system similar to AFX to show the spell system at work. I've fought with the idea to recruit help for a while as for the most part it's only necessary so it doesn't take me the next decade to finish, but this is basically my attempt at gettings things rolling properly after years of brainstorming and not much else.

There is no real plan to do any work that requires major source code changes until Torque 3D has at least reached it's first release candidate so it's giving me plenty of time to write a fully detailed design document.

That's cool. Your project does sound pretty interesting, so I'm looking forward to hearing more about it later on :)

i want to do a rpg game also, but alone is almost impossible, if you want someone to discuss ideas or just talk about features of the game, you can add me chicohermida at gmail dot com . I looking for discussions about games with solid arguments and innovative visions for gameplay.

I appreciate the sudden interest from all of you, however due to lack of time and funding (not to mention the current US economy), I've been forced to put things on hold until further notice. As long as I don't get myself killed(I really didn't expect to ever join the military), I hope to be able to complete my prototype and pick things back up sometime in the next year or so.

I can help out with programming. I noticed you mentioned reworking Torque; I don't have access to the source code. I was going to try an RPG, so if you want my help my email is noyolaboys@sbcglobal.net
