Value Interface stops working when using Templates

In my game I have an airplane and HUD object setup similar to the Airplane Tutorial's Compass. Everything works fine if my airplane and HUD object are both scene objects. I can make the HUD object a template, place a spawner object of it in the scene and it still works fine. If I make the airplane a template then it stops working (whether the HUD object is a template or not).
I've tried naming the airplane spawner object in its Scripting tab and setting that to the HUD object's "MonitoredObject" (in the RotatedGaugeComponent per the Airplane Tutorial), but no luck.
Just wondering if this is a known issue, if I am doing something wrong or if something has changed in TorqueX 3 from what the tutorials show. Any help is much appreciated.
