Exporting a character with a body and armour

Hi,
Im looking for some assistance if possible.
I have created and rigged a character, and exported as a dts file, these seems to work reasonably successfully.
I have been using the DOIT tool.
However the character also has armour and when I use the skin modifier and add these elements to the relevant biped bones, the export doesnt seem to work, I get missing bones errors and basically I cannot seem to export it as a result.
I have also posted a similar thread on the collada forum as I used collada as well but they also produced strange results.
This leads me to think that the skinning that i'm doing on the model just isnt right and there are some heirachy issues.
