Whats your preferred crosshair type?

by Roger Smith · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 03/06/2003 (1:38 am) · 25 replies

What do you like in a FPS crosshair? If possible post an example of your ideal crosshair. Im making crosshairs and id like to know what designs other people like. People can use these anyway they want.

I like the one down at the bottom third one in; also it depends on what weapon you are firing like a Rocket launcher and sniper scope would have two totaly diffrent cross hairs.

Also would you be able to number the cross hairs it would be much easier choosing witch one

I mostly want to know what makes you like one crosshair over the other. I like just a little line going left and right in a crosshair so i can lead a target, other than that i want as small and unobtrusive as possible.

I personally like rounded crosshairs. I really don't know why but I do much better. For instance I had to change the crosshair of the Tibes 2 Sniper Rifle (Laser) because I couldn't hit a barn with that thing. I changed to the shrike crosshair and started hitting everything. The round crosshair just seems to give a better feel for the target IMO.

I like #9. The crosshairs that don't take up too much space and have a dot in the very center helps me aim better. If I recall, Max Payne had a thin circle with a dot in the center... that was good. :)

#2 has my vote. I like rounded ones as well. IMO there should always be something in the center even if it's nothing more than a dot, just so you can tell if you've got it lined up dead center.

Number 2. There's something about that "style" of crosshair that makes me feel all "Space Mariney". (C:

I prefer the smallest (but still useful) crosshair I can get. In the pics above I'd pick #9. Actually just a small 'x' or a '+' would work well for me. Make it usable, but keep it from taking up my field of vision and I'm happy.

I played a couple games with just a bright dot and that worked great :)

Of course, I don't play FPS games much anymore as I've switched to RPGs mostly. Not much need for crosshairs in RPGs :)

I think for me crosshairs have to be almost unnoticable. I like when the crosshair is semi transparent with thin lines and it has to have some indicator of the exact spot I'm firing. The indicator should be simple, like an x or + or dot (although I think I prefer x or +) and it should be symmetrical.

If you want a good example of a really bad crosshair take a look at Ghost Recon for the X-box. You'd have to move your cursor out of the way to tell if you shot someone.

I am into realism, so I'm not too big on crosshairs. I think a semi-transparent circle that is pretty big size (like the size of a nickel on screen) is how I'd do it. And have iron sights on the weapon if you want to shoot accurately. The crosshair is really only useful for close range engagements.

Like I said, I like realism :)

LOL!

So when you are firing balls of plasma energy at the 6-armed alien in a zero-G atmosphere it should be realistic? :)

Isn't that an oxymoron? :)

heh... when I typed that, I actually had something like "Obviously this doesn't apply to futureistic games" at the end of it, but I deleted it because I figured it goes without saying :)

I like #2 the best. The others look cool, but I couldn't imagine shooting anything with 'em.

Interactive crosshairs are good, too. If they adjust to give a "true" strike point (for instance, if you aim at a very close object, having the crosshair adjust to show how the off-centered firing of the weapon will affect the strike point of your projectiles), or to show how much energy you have (there was a mod for Tribes which let you have a little status bar by the reticle, showing how full your charge was on the sniper gun... very handy.), or ranging information, etc.

Halflife made a brilliant move by showing direction of damage with wedges around the reticle area.

It all depends on the look and feel of the game. I personally couldn't see the pic you put up, so I can't pick a favorite. Opera (an HL mod that more people should check out cuz its not near as popular as it should be) uses an asian character. I don't know what sound it represents or anything, but it fits well with the theme they are going for. The "cross" in crosshair doesn't necessarily need to be there...just something that people can place over their target and shoot... It'd be more important to me that it matches the look and feel of the game.

I dunno which one I like the most. I like it when a crosshair does something not to distracting to get your attention when it's aiming at an enemy. (If any of you can't imagine a possibility the crosshair could turn red)

#2 isn't bad, but it's not great. If you're looking for good ideas for reticle design, look at the companies who are making optics. Some links below:

(reticle styles displayed at the bottom)

Hope this helps.

good call. Crosshair turning red over threats, and like green over non threats would be cool. Or maybe text underneathe describing what you are looking at....But definitely non-obtrusive..

I personally prefer just a simple dot in the center of the screen.

In the above image, I would choose 11.
