Anyone try the new 3.1 beta firmware?

by BeyondtheTech · in iTorque 2D · 07/01/2009 (8:54 pm) · 7 replies

According to MacRumors, "OpenGL and Quartz have seen improvements."

As someone who's on the verge of submitting their game, I'm itching to try the firmware, but must refrain.

So, has anyone else tried it? Seen improvements? Breaks compatibility?

Not tried yet as I have no interest to install an OS that will time out again in a way that does not even allow me to backup any further, making me lose all stored app data as it happened with 3.0 Beta 2

I didn't start using 3.x until beta 5, and everything was fine. Now backups even remember the position of my apps! Not going to use 3.1 until there is a stable release, though, as the GL fixes are mainly ES 2.0 additions and optimisations to make 3G S run cooler (there is a serious heat problem).

FYI, my game still works the same way with 3.1 beta 2. Supposedly there are enhancements or changes to CoreAudio, but I don't notice anything.

Another feature in 3.1: Now you can debug over wi-fi, rather than just USB. Maybe we'll be able to sync over wi-fi eventually? And perhaps they are preparing GameKit to be able to use peer-to-peer with device+simulator.

the quartz stuff etc is primary/only for the 3GS according to reports on the topic. optimization on the performance / W end, to prevent the overheating etc

not really interested in that because it's not like we can use all those shiny new features with iTGB 1.2 ......... >:|

Sure you can, you just have to add them.
I wouldn't expect to get all those stuff done for you as many of the 3.0 thinks are used pretty project specific so you will need to implement them yourself at least partially (In App purchases beeing a very good example for that).

The only OS 3.0 feature that really makes sense to be integrated by default is BT peer 2 peer networking ... and its about the only thing I'm not interested in as I never activate my bluetooth (once for flight control but that was it in the 16 months I own my 3G)

My main problem though is that I don't want to have OS 3 as a minimum requirement, so as long as the tricks to use OS 3 features on OS 3 and otherwise disable them isn't publically known (right now only few games have such capabilities), I don't want any OS 3 features in actually.
