How to make a movie with 2d and 3d?

Hey all:
I want to try making a short movie with 3d backgrounds i create in truespace and 2d art for the characters (probably scanned and edited with photoshop) but i really dont know where to start on this process. If i want the 3d backgrounds to have motion then they need to be broken into frames for me to draw on. if i dont want them to move then i can just save my 3d SCENE as a jpeg or png and overlay my characters onto it.
I was just wondering if anyone has come across any programs or tutorials or just somewhere i can go to look and learn.
Thx for any help anyone can provide.

You were planning to draw the characters on the computer, or scan them from existing drawings? After Effects is your best option for Windows. If you have access to a Mac, Apple's Final Cut is definitely the way to go. Both programs have student pricing available, and fairly advanced compositing features.

Anyways, to get the effect you want, you can also paint a plane in tS with an animated texture(bitmap sequences or avi's), and then move the plane around, so that you get shadows and whatnot. Then you can render it all out at once. Hope that helps...

Ted have you seen the movie Titan A.E its mostly 3d backgrounds and props with 2d characters, a different style for a animated movie but a great one....The ice asteroids crashing together was awsome. i plan on doing something like that but with the use of Anime for character designs and 3d (truespace) backrounds and props(vehicals and whatnot). I have no point in doing this i just want to see if i can :OP Im outa work and bored haha.thx for all your replys.

Titan suffered (imo) from too pale characters and a bit too rich backgrounds, switching attention to 3D.

Your biggest challenge will be blending characters and backgrounds believably. Try to use similar color tones for both characters and backgrounds, also make 3D backgrounds with deep perspective, pushing background far. Maybe blur them as well.Titan suffered (imo) from too pale characters and a bit too rich backgrounds, switching attention to 3D.

A good link for compositing would be this: vfxtalk.
It's a pretty new forum but it's building up steam.
