How to texture a model

I have made a model in blender and am now at the point where it needs to be textured. I would like to know how to load and apply them to different parts of the model. The parts of the model that need to be textured are very distinguished, it should be very basic because I'm only using a few textures. Thanks.

not sure how many people know this but the new photoshop cs4 has the ability to texture 3d models. simply import your model, paint it and it will export your texture map for you. Its pretty sick.
