detail texture

My detail texture looks blurry up close. I have tried to change settings to make it so the user sees the detail close up to no avail. Which settings allow high resolution detail up close and fade off in the distance?

Also would like to know how to make changes to the values in the terrain in game and affect change. TGE used to have a "Apply" button but I dont see one here.

Thanks...

in the detail texture portion of the terrain painter material editor the repeat value is the scale of the detail texture, and distance is how far you can see the full detail texture before it blends away.

Of course quality of the soiurce image is important too :)

as far as the apply button, as soon asyou switch the focus away from the field your editing most stuff is auto apply, when editing materials however you do actually have to save but this is done when you 'select' the material.

I changed the repeat value to 512 and it looks better but now I see the texture repeat at a distance. Do the detail textures need to be large? Like 512 or 1024 ?

The larger the detail texture the less you will see it repeat. But the bigger you make the texture the less you need it to repeat.

To be honest tiling textures with no artifacts are somewhat of a holy grail as far as ive seen. But reducing the detail texture visible range usually fixes some of the issues

Well I have tried larger detail textures and I still get ugly terrain up close, about 10 meters away it looks great then beyond that it looks like repeating rows. I used 1024 for the repeat and 100 for distance.
Would it help if I added normal map? I can't imagine it is required to get the texture to look anywhere close to decent up close.

Its tricky to get a good balance between details and repeat.

Case in point... fire up the Crysis Sandbox editor and disable all the ground cover, roads, decals, and trees. You'll see that the ground textures in Crysis repeat heavily as well... its all the other stuff that helps hide it.

If the terrain is perfectly flat.... if anything... the normal maps will make it worse.
