Sequences refuse to export
by Nicolai Dutka · in Torque Game Engine Advanced · 06/03/2009 (5:31 pm) · 13 replies
I've got a character setup and have been using the OLD exporter to export the DTS with animations. I now need to use the DTS Exporter Pro to export the character, but it simply refuses to export the sequences. I've tried everything I can possibly think of and I am getting no results at all. I would be happy to provide any screenshots or info that might help, just let me know what is needed to get this working...

(Don't forget to unblock the chm in it's properties panel.)

Sequence markers are different between the old Max exporter and the dark industries Max exporter. The original Max exporter has a special helper object for sequences and the Dark Industries exporter is more like the Maya exporter. The sequence marker in the D.I. Max exporter is just a dummy object with some custom properties on it.
The UI for the DTS Exporter Pro automates the creation of sequence helpers for use with the D.I. dts exporter.

How would I check this?
Here's a screenshot of my exporter utility with just the root animation setup:

EDIT: I did double check and I am using the latest one from the DTS Exporter download page marked for Max 2009. It has the date: April 27, 2008

The DTS exporter utility will install and "work" regardless of which DTS exporter you are using, but it was built specifically for DTS exporter pro. As a result if you are using it with the older DTS exporter you will probably have problems.

What is the url to the DTS Exporter download page you are mentioning? As far as I know the DTS exporter pro was never "officially" compiled for Max 2009.The DTS exporter utility will install and "work" regardless of which DTS exporter you are using, but it was built specifically for DTS exporter pro. I extracted both, right-click, and compare properties... They are identical...
Does anyone know of a handy 'step-by-step' guide for the exporter?
Using the OLD exporter mentioned by 'eb' above, I am able to get my character exported with animations, but I've been able to do that one for YEARS now... The problem with that one is that it refuses to export the sequence triggers for footstep sounds/decals.
I can clearly see in the new DTS Exporter Pro, in the Trigger Manager, that my footstep triggers certainly are there, but the sequence themselves won't export (and of course, the sequence trigger won't export if the sequence won't export).

Hate to break it to ya Bloodknight, but that file contains the exact same exporter as the one I linked to..I extracted both, right-click, and compare properties... They are identical...

The UI that you posted a screen shot of here was written for the Max DTS Exporter Pro and is not completely compatible with the exporter version that you are using. I know this because I wrote the UI for the DTS Exporter Pro and worked on the DTS Exporter Pro.
Most of the settings in the UI for the DTS Exporter Pro are built specifically for that version of the exporter and as a result numerous things such as the sequences section of the UI will not work with the Max 2009 DTS exporter.
You will need to use the Sequence helpers that are part of the Max 2009 exporter. They should be located in the Utility panel under DTS exporter utility / sequences. The process is described in the help document that EB posted a few posts back.

Unfortunately, that brings me full circle back to my original problem...
I have been using the sequence helpers for a number of years now and all my characters come through animated and good to go... except there is no sounds/decals for foot steps...
I opened up the sequences in my curve editor, found the 'trigger' track, and added keys to the appropriate frames giving them the appropriate values and the sequence triggers simply refuse to export with the sequences.
Here is a link to that issue:

So... any chance this will be updated? If so, where would I get the update? I seriously cannot recall where I even got this one, but I do see a file called serial.txt...

I double checked my files and I do have both the standard and pro exporter, but like you said Matt, the "pro" one is dated back to Novemeber 5, 2006 and was in a folder I had labeled: Max9So... any chance this will be updated? If someone else feels like doing so let me know and I can provide the source code.

I actually wouldn't mind updating the Max DTS Exporter Pro, the unfortunate thing is that I do not have access to the latest the Max SDK and thus cannot compile an updated version. If someone else feels like doing so let me know and I can provide the source code.

Is the "Pro" exporter actually useful? Is how to use it documented somewhere? If there exists documentation, I might actually build it for real, and try it on my own mesh; if it works, I can post a build.

I recently re-built max2dtsExporterPro for Max 2009. However, then I realized that that was a smaller/different exporter from the one that ships and is documented. The actual latest exporter *seems* to be the max2dtsExporter (no plus or pro) -- that's the one that supports dsq through special sequence helper objects. I tried re-building that for Max 2009, but it fails with some incompatibilities, where it appears the engine has been updated but the exporter not.Is the "Pro" exporter actually useful?
